On September 1, 1893 the quiet little town of Ingalls, Oklahoma erupted in gunfire as the infamous Doolin-Dalton Gang faced off against a posse of U.S. Marshals in a dramatic showdown known as the Battle of Ingalls. The outlaws had been hiding out in town for a couple of years at that point, beginning sometime around 1891. This fierce battle left its mark on the Old West, as bullets flew through the streets of this small community, now a ghost town located about ten miles outside Stillwater.

Although Ingalls itself has largely faded into history, echoes of that wild day remain. Visitors to Stillwater can take a short drive out to Ingalls to explore the remnants of this notorious hideout, and to reflect on the lives and times of the outlaws who once roamed these lands. It’s a unique opportunity to experience a bit of the Wild West just a stone’s throw from all the modern comforts and amenities of America’s Friendliest College Town. You can learn more about the Doolin-Dalton Gang, the Battle of Ingalls, and even how The Eagles commemorated the event in the first track of their 1973 album Desperado at https://tinyurl.com/BattleOfIngalls

With classes back in session and several Oklahoma State Athletics seasons about to kick off, here's a bit of OSU sports history for you:

On December 18, 1944, Oklahoma State Cowboy Basketball (then the Oklahoma A&M Aggies) player Bob Kurland performed the sport’s first dunk. And amazingly, it wasn’t even intentional. As Kurland later recalled: “The ball happened to be under the basket. I stuffed it in. It wasn’t planned, just a spontaneous play.” This was just one of Kurland’s contributions under legendary OSU basketball coach Hank Iba, as the 6'10" star center led the Aggies to back-to-back national championships in 1945 and 1946.

After his time at Oklahoma A&M, Bob Kurland went on to play for the Phillips 66ers AAU team (also known as the Oilers) based in Bartlesville. His talent made this team a powerhouse as well, as he led it to three of its own national championships. After being selected to compete on the US Olympic basketball team in 1948 and 1952, Kurland became the first player in the sport’s history to win two Olympic gold medals.

Visit Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater to learn more about Bob Kurland and the many other amazing athletes with ties to Oklahoma State University at the Heritage Hall Museum. You can also find more information on Kurland and his unprecedented achievements at https://tinyurl.com/VSBobKurland
