Images of Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton are instantly recognizable as the iconic cowboy upon which the Oklahoma State University mascot is based, but did you know that he was also an author? Beyond his fame as a sharpshooter and quick draw artist, Eaton was a beloved storyteller in the Stillwater/Perkins area.

On weekends local children would gather at his home to hear some fascinating tales and watch his impressive shooting demonstrations. Eaton's storytelling talent was so admired that in 1950 he began writing a weekly column for the Perkins Journal. Initially known as “Truthful Pete Says,” the column’s humorous and exaggerated tales led to its being renamed “Pistol Pete Says.” Eaton’s stories were widely admired for their wit, colorful characters, and an everyman philosophy reminiscent of the famous Oklahoma humorist Will Rogers.

Eaton didn't just write; he often set the type and hand-cranked the presses himself to ensure that his work was printed on time. In 1952 he published an autobiography titled “Pistol Pete: Veteran of the Old West,” which the Chicago Tribune praised as “an exciting, genuine bit of Americana.” Written in 1957, his second book “Campfire Stories: Remembrances of a Cowboy Legend” was published posthumously in 1988.

With all these spring storms blowing through lately, we thought we'd cover some of Stillwater's storm chasing history. Dr. Herbert "Cyclone" Jones, the nation's first civilian tornado researcher, revolutionized our understanding of severe weather. His journey began with a terrifying tornado experience in his childhood, which sparked his lifelong passion for studying severe thunderstorms. This passion led him to Oklahoma A&M (today's Oklahoma State University), where he conducted groundbreaking research on the electrical activity of severe thunderstorms.

Dr. Jones' innovative work laid the foundation for tornado prediction and safety. In 1946 he formed a team of graduate students who had returned from World War II skilled in the cutting-edge technology of the time. Under his supervision they built the world's first tornado research lab at Stillwater Regional Airport, which they used to develop the earliest methods of real-time tornado detection. Then on May 25, 1955, a deadly supercell producing squall lines and several tornados barreled across Oklahoma and Kansas, putting the team's methodology to the test. Ultimately, the data collected that day validated their methods.

These successes earned Jones and his team national recognition, and soon Dr. Jones was widely known as "Cyclone Jones." His efforts not only advanced meteorology by decades, but led to the creation of modern tornado warning systems that have saved countless lives.
