๐จ BREAKING: According to a new Bloomberg report, Spirit Airlines may be just days away from total liquidation.
On April 15, 2026, Bloomberg reported that Spirit Aviation Holdings is at risk of being shut down entirely, with a decision potentially coming as soon as this week. The cause is the surge in jet fuel prices triggered by the ongoing US war with Iran, which has rapidly worsened the airline's already fragile financial position.
Spirit first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2024, after failed merger attempts with both Frontier and JetBlue. The airline emerged from that first bankruptcy in early 2025, then filed a second time in August 2025.
Just two months ago, things had started to look better. On February 24, 2026, Spirit announced a deal with creditors that would allow it to exit bankruptcy by early summer 2026, cutting its debt from $7.4 billion to $2.1 billion.
Then jet fuel prices surged. Spirit had already warned that higher fuel costs could force liquidation, and that warning is now becoming reality.
The airline has already shrunk dramatically. It sold 20 Airbus aircraft, exited 14 airports, and cut its summer 2026 schedule by nearly 40%. Pilots and flight attendants gave up $100 million in concessions to help save the company.
If Spirit is liquidated, thousands of employees would lose their jobs and fares across the entire US airline industry are expected to rise.
