Is Tahiti really that far? Not as far as most people think, but the flights work differently.

Tahiti is in the same time zone as Hawai‘i. From Los Angeles, the flight to Papeete is about eight and a half hours, a few hours longer than flying to Honolulu. From Houston, Hawai‘i has nonstop options, while Tahiti means connecting on the West Coast.

The bigger difference is how many flights there are. There are far fewer than to Hawai‘i, and many routes don’t run every day, so a cancellation can mean waiting a day or more for an open seat, not a few hours.

I learned that firsthand last December when my flight home was cancelled. My local ground partner flagged it before it was announced at the airport, so I was already working on a new routing while everyone else was just finding out.

That’s why I plan Tahiti flights with extra care, with connections that have breathing room and someone keeping an eye on things while you travel, whether that’s me, a colleague, or a local partner.

The question that tells me the most isn’t the first one I ask.

Every trip conversation starts with what you’re looking for. Where you’re thinking of going, who’s coming, and what this trip needs to be, whether it’s a honeymoon, a milestone birthday, or the first big trip with the kids.

But somewhere along the way, I often ask about past trips and what didn’t work. The room that felt cramped by day three. The transfer that ate half a day. The resort that looked quiet online and wasn’t.

Those answers often tell me more than any wish list. They’re how a recommendation ends up fitting the way you travel instead of just looking good in photos.

Most people picture New Zealand in summer. Our group is going in April, and that’s autumn there.

April in New Zealand means cooler days, golden color in the valleys and vineyards, and fewer crowds than the summer months.

Our travel club, Suitcases & Savoir Faire Society, which I help run with Exemplary Travel Advisors, is heading there next April. Both islands, the fiords, and about twelve days with time to actually take it in. I’ll be traveling along with the group.

Tahiti's wet season has a reputation. It isn't the whole story.

"Wet season" sounds like a reason to wait. In French Polynesia, it's not that simple.

From roughly November through April, it's warmer and more humid, and it rains more. But rain there often comes as passing showers, and the water is at its warmest. I was there last December and barely saw rain, maybe a quick shower here and there. One trip isn't a forecast, but the season's reputation doesn't always match the reality.

It's a good fit for travelers who are flexible and mostly want to be in the water. If your trip is short or centered on one can't-miss excursion, the drier months may be the better call.

Which side of the island you stay on can matter more than which resort you pick.

Kaua‘i is a small island, but where you stay changes the whole trip.

Poipu, on the south shore, tends to be sunnier and drier, with easier beach days through the winter. Hanalei and the north shore are greener and slower, with mountains dropping right down to the bay, more rain, and big winter surf that can make some beaches unsafe for swimming.

And getting between them takes longer than people expect. There’s a one-lane bridge into Hanalei, and the drive back and forth adds up fast. That’s why several of my clients lately have split their stay, a few nights on each side, so they actually experience both instead of spending their days in the car.

So before I ask which resort, I ask what kind of days you want and when you’re going.

Picking the destination is the easy part.

People often come to me already knowing where they want to go. Hawaii. Tahiti. Somewhere with a beach and a view.

That's a great starting point, but it's really only the first decision. Which island. Which resort. Which room, and whether it actually works for the people coming along. "French Polynesia" can mean a busy stay on Tahiti or a quiet week on a remote atoll. "Maui" can mean a standard room or a suite with space to spread out.

Those smaller choices are where a trip works or doesn't, and they're the part I enjoy most.

One of my favorite Maui resorts for families starts you in a suite.

Most resorts start you in a standard room, and you pay more for anything with extra space.

There's a resort on Maui I love for families where the lowest category is already a suite. Not an upgrade, just where the price list begins. Having a separate living area and room to spread out makes a big difference when you're traveling with kids, or with grandparents along for the trip.

It's a good example of why I ask who's sleeping where before I suggest anywhere. The right resort for one family can look very different from the right one for another.
