After designing trips across more than 50 countries, we've noticed the same four things shape every itinerary that actually works. We share these with every new client, so we thought we'd share them here too.

1. Pacing shapes everything. The difference between a trip you remember and a trip you recover from often comes down to how many nights you spend in each place.

2. Local timing changes the experience. Festivals, market days, harvest seasons, even the hour you arrive at a site. Knowing the rhythm of a place is half the magic.

3. Accommodation placement matters more than the hotel itself. A beautiful room in the wrong neighborhood can cost you a full day.

4. Travel Designers can access what you can't. Private after-hours visits, the chef who only cooks for six guests, the guide who grew up in the village. These doors don't appear on booking sites.

There's a difference between a resort that says it's "accessible" and a resort that actually works for your specific needs.

That gap is where most accessible trips come undone. Three things most travelers don't realize:

First, a property can check the "accessible" box and still lack pool lifts, beach sand wheelchairs, or rooms close enough to the amenities to be practical. The details that matter most rarely appear in a standard listing.

Second, the beach is part of the trip too. Sand wheelchairs, beach matting, and true waterfront access exist at specific properties, they're just rarely advertised. Knowing which ones, and securing them before you arrive, is what turns a beach vacation from something you watch into something you fully experience.

Third, accessibility needs a specialist. Travelers with mobility needs, chronic illness, or sensory sensitivities benefit most from a designer who has lived these realities rather than worked from a checklist. We've coordinated group trips for as few as 8 travelers and as many as 36. The ones that go sideways almost always share one thing: the group chose a format that didn't match how they actually make decisions together.

Before you debate the destination, figure out this first. Is yours a structured group tour crew, or a fully custom itinerary crew?

A structured group tour suits the group that wants the decisions already made. The days have a shape, the reservations are set, and nobody spends the third morning debating where to eat. When your reunion or milestone trip has twelve opinions and one person quietly carrying all of them, that structure is a gift. Everyone shows up, follows the thread, and enjoys it.

A fully custom itinerary suits the group that wants room to breathe. Grandparents who need slower mornings, teenagers who want one adventurous afternoon on their own, the couple celebrating an anniversary in the middle of the family week. Travel Designer Thoughts Thursday!!!

There's a particular kind of quiet that comes with solo travel. You wake before the city does, follow your own instincts down an unfamiliar street, and let the day unfold entirely on your terms.

Then there's the other kind of magic. The laughter shared over a long table, the inside jokes born from a missed train, the memories that only make sense to the people who were there with you.

Solo adventure or traveling with your crew. Which one feeds your soul?

Neither answer is wrong. Some journeys are meant for reflection, for reconnecting with yourself far from the noise of ordinary life. Others come alive in the company of others, whether that's an intimate itinerary crafted for one or a spirited group of ten or more finding their rhythm together.

I have personally traveled in a group and have done a LOT of solo traveling. At first I didn't know what to expect, and now, traveling solo is 2nd nature. Of course I never meet a stranger so even if I start a trip on my own, I usually end up meeting a new friend along the way!
