🇯🇴 PETRA | Beyond the Treasury

If you visit Petra, take the famous photo in front of the Treasury—but don’t turn around and leave! Some of Petra’s most incredible experiences are found farther along the trail.

🥾 Climb to the Monastery
Yes, it’s roughly 800 steps, but the reward is one of Petra’s most impressive monuments. Continue a little farther to the viewpoints for spectacular views across the surrounding mountains.

🏛 Explore the Royal Tombs
Carved directly into the cliffs, these enormous tombs are easy to overlook when you’re focused on reaching the Monastery. Take the time to wander through them and admire the incredible colors of the sandstone.

📸 Hike to a Treasury Viewpoint
Seeing the Treasury from above gives you an entirely different perspective. Skip the unofficial shortcuts and use established trails—ideally with a local guide for the longer routes.

🥾 Take the Back Door into Petra
For something completely different, hike into Petra from Little Petra, approaching the Monastery before continuing through the ancient city toward the Treasury. It’s a fantastic option for active travelers and one of my favorite ways to experience the scale of Petra.

🕯 See Petra by Night
On select evenings, thousands of candles illuminate the Siq and Treasury. It’s a completely different atmosphere from visiting during the day.

💡 Travel Tip: This is why I recommend two days in Petra whenever your itinerary allows. Spend your first day seeing the iconic sights, then use the second to hike, explore and discover the places many visitors never reach.

Sometimes the best travel experiences happen after you’ve checked off the “must-see.”

🇯🇴 PETRA | So Much More Than the Treasury

You’ve seen the photo. You know the famous rose-colored façade. But nothing quite prepares you for the moment you walk through the narrow Siq and catch your first glimpse of the Treasury.

And here’s the thing—that’s only the beginning.

Petra was once a thriving Nabataean city, and today the archaeological site stretches across a vast landscape filled with tombs, temples, trails and incredible viewpoints.

🥾 Walk the winding Siq to the Treasury
🏛 Explore the Royal Tombs and ancient Roman-style streets
⛰ Climb roughly 800 steps to the magnificent Monastery
📸 Hike to viewpoints overlooking the Treasury
🕯 Experience Petra by Night when available
☕ Stop for tea, slow down and take in the sheer scale of this ancient city

💡 Travel Tip: Don’t try to squeeze Petra into a couple of hours. Give yourself at least one full day—and ideally two if you want time to hike and explore beyond the main trail. Wear comfortable shoes because you’ll cover far more ground than you expect!

And consider staying in Wadi Musa, the town just outside Petra, so you can arrive early before the biggest crowds.

Petra may be the reason many travelers first dream about Jordan, but once you experience it, you’ll understand why it became one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. 🌹

🇯🇴 WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT JORDAN?

Good news—Jordan can be visited year-round, but spring and fall are the sweet spots if you want comfortable temperatures for exploring.

🌸 March–May | Spring
One of the best times to visit. Days are generally warm and pleasant, wildflowers can brighten the northern landscapes, and the temperatures are ideal for long days exploring Petra and hiking.

☀️ June–August | Summer
Expect the heat! Petra and Wadi Rum can get very hot during the day, although the dry climate and cooler evenings can make it more manageable. Start sightseeing early and save the hottest part of the day for relaxing.

🍂 September–November | Fall
Another fantastic time to go. Temperatures begin to cool, making it perfect for Petra, Wadi Rum, Amman and the Dead Sea.

🧥 December–February | Winter
Jordan does get cold! Amman and Petra can experience chilly temperatures—and even occasional snow—while Aqaba and the Dead Sea remain much milder. This tends to be the rainy season as well, so expect to get wet.

💡 My Pick: Aim for April–May or October–early November for a great balance of comfortable weather and outdoor adventure.

One more thing to consider: Ramadan dates change each year. Traveling during Ramadan can be a wonderful cultural experience, but some restaurants, attractions and businesses may operate on adjusted schedules, so it’s worth checking the dates before planning your trip.

🇯🇴 MOUNT NEBO | Where Faith & History Meet

Some places are impressive because of what you see. Others are powerful because of what happened there.

According to biblical tradition, Mount Nebo is where Moses stood and looked out over the Promised Land before his death. Today, visitors can stand on the mountain and take in sweeping views across the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea—and on a clear day, as far as Jerusalem.

⛪ Visit the Memorial Church of Moses
🎨 See beautiful ancient Byzantine mosaics
📍 Stand at the viewpoint overlooking the Promised Land
✝️ See the iconic Serpentine Cross sculpture
🏺 Explore the archaeological remains surrounding the site

Whether you visit for its religious significance, its history or simply the incredible views, Mount Nebo is one of those places where it’s worth slowing down and taking in where you are.

💡 Travel Tip: Mount Nebo is near Madaba, making it easy to combine the two—and it fits perfectly into an itinerary traveling from Amman toward the Dead Sea or Petra. While in Madaba, stop at St. George’s Church to see the famous 6th-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land - the oldest known map of the city.

Jordan isn’t just a place you visit. In many places, you’re literally walking through thousands of years of history. 🇯🇴

🇯🇴 JERASH | Step Into Ancient Rome

About an hour north of Amman lies one of Jordan’s most impressive historical treasures: Jerash, home to some of the best-preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy.

Walk beneath Hadrian’s Arch, stand in the enormous Oval Plaza, follow the ancient columns along the Cardo, and explore temples, theaters and streets that have survived for nearly 2,000 years.

🏛 Don’t miss:
• Hadrian’s Arch
• The Oval Plaza
• Temple of Artemis
• Temple of Zeus
• The Cardo Maximus
• The ancient theaters

What makes Jerash so special is its scale. This isn’t one monument or a handful of ruins—it’s an entire ancient city you can walk through and explore.

💡 Travel Tip: Jerash makes an easy day trip from Amman and can be combined with other stops in northern Jordan.

If you love history, don’t skip Jerash just because Petra gets all the attention. This may be one of the biggest surprises of your trip.

🇯🇴 AMMAN | Where Ancient History Meets Modern Jordan

It may be the starting point for your Jordan adventure, but don’t make the mistake of simply passing through Amman.

🏛 Climb to the Amman Citadel for ancient ruins and incredible views over the city.
🎭 Step inside the remarkably preserved Roman Theatre, built nearly 2,000 years ago.
🛍 Wander the bustling streets and souks of Downtown Amman, stopping for fresh falafel, hummus and a taste of knafeh.
☕ Slow down with a cup of Arabic coffee or mint tea and experience the warmth and hospitality Jordan is famous for.
🌙 Head to Rainbow Street in the evening for restaurants, cafés and a glimpse of modern Amman.

Amman is a city of contrasts—Roman ruins beside busy streets, ancient traditions alongside trendy cafés, and layer upon layer of history everywhere you look.

My advice? Give Amman at least one full day before heading off to explore the rest of Jordan.

🚢 River Cruise Reality Check: So Many Rivers, So Many Choices

As I wrap up this month's River Cruise Reality Check series, one thing has become clear—there isn't just one way to experience a river cruise.

While my journey aboard AmaWaterways' AmaSerena was fantastic, there are dozens of river cruise lines sailing the world's waterways, each with its own personality and style.

Some of the most respected names in river cruising include AmaWaterways, Viking, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Tauck, and Scenic. Some focus on luxury, others on immersive cultural experiences, active excursions, all-inclusive amenities, or innovative ship designs. The "best" cruise line really depends on your travel style and what you're looking for.

Personally, I'd love to sail with AmaWaterways again. They set the bar high for my first river cruise experience. But I'm also excited to explore what some of the other leading river cruise lines have to offer. After all, every river, every ship, and every itinerary tells a different story.
