Maui Food Friday, and we're grabbing lunch at Seascape in the Maui Ocean Center! They offer the best harbor views and serve 100% sustainable dishes! We highly recommend the chef's poke bowl. It’s a dish we look forward to a couple of times a month.

The arms of your glasses sit exactly where a snorkel mask has to seal against your face. That's the whole reason the two don't work together, and it's the part people don't think about until they're holding the mask.

So we keep optical prescription masks on board, on both boats, from -1.5 to -6 in half-diopter steps. There are only a limited number of them, so tell us when you book and we'll hold one with your name on it.

Contacts are easier. Soft lenses go under a standard mask with no problem at all. The thing to get right is the seal, so have a crew member check your fit before you get in. And if you ever need to clear the mask in the water, keep your eyes closed until it's back on and drained.

The honu at Turtle Town tend to come back to the same few reef structures day after day. Same ledge, same overhang, same patch of algae. That's how the place got its name.

It also means the best thing you can do when one swims past is nothing at all. Float flat, stay still, and let the turtle decide how close it wants to get. Getting between a turtle and open water is illegal under the Endangered Species Act, and it's also the quickest way to end the encounter.
