Agnes and I had our final adventure together today...
I found her this morning down in the pasture with a bad case of likely bloat. After calling everyone under the sun and no one available to help, we made the difficult decision to end her suffering.
Agnes came into our lives just before Christmas in 2016. Mom and I found an ad about bottles calves for sale and before anyone told us no, we drove nearly 2 hours to go pick up 4 calves. Agnes was one of those calves. The other three calves unfortunately succumbed to a bad case of scours, but thankfully Agnes flourished. D and I referred to her as our first kid since she came into our lives 2 months into dating.
Agnes would continue to grow and grow...and grow. She matured to a whopping 2,000lbs and roughly 5'5" in height. We thought we could make a momma out of her, but soon discovered that was not possible with her being a freemartin. She was loved all her years and she put up with my shenanigans of saddling and ponying her, as well as dressing her up for pictures. She was sweet as could be (minus her 2 year old year) and honestly was like a giant dog. Decisions like this are never easy, but I have peace in knowing she went with dignity and compassion. I'll miss you, Agnes. 💜
