The largest cave on earth admits a thousand people a year.

Sơn Đoòng sits inside Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park in Quảng Bình province. Its main passage runs about nine kilometres and reaches 200 metres high in places. There is enough space inside for a stretch of jungle to grow, lit through skylights where the roof has collapsed.

Vietnam licenses a single operator and caps numbers at a thousand visitors annually. Expeditions run January to August and book out far ahead.

You do not need to get into Sơn Đoòng for Phong Nha to be worth the journey. Hang Én and Paradise Cave are extraordinary and far easier to reach. Tell us your appetite for it and we will build the trip to match.

The boatwomen of Ninh Bình row with their feet.

It is not a trick for visitors. Sitting facing forward and working the oars with the soles of the feet spares the arms and back, and lets them row for hours. You will see it right through Tràng An and Tam Cốc.

Tràng An became a UNESCO site in 2014, the first place in Southeast Asia listed for both its natural and its cultural value. Threaded through the limestone are 49 caves, temples in hidden valleys, and Hoa Lư, which was Vietnam's capital a thousand years ago.

If you only have time for one boat trip, we would take Tràng An. Tam Cốc is a there-and-back through the rice paddies and it is lovely. Tràng An is a loop that takes you through the caves themselves. Different trip.

There is a difference between a guided tour and a hosted journey, and it is worth being clear about it.

On a guided tour you are handed to a local guide at each stop. They are often excellent. But nobody travels the whole way with you, and nobody is accountable for the shape of the trip once it is under way.

On a hosted journey, Murray goes. He is there at breakfast, on the train, at the table. When the weather turns, or a road closes, or the group is simply tired, the plan changes that day, in the room, rather than through an office in another time zone.

Groups stay small for exactly that reason. Ask us when the next one goes.

Once a month, Hội An turns the lights off.

On the 14th night of each lunar month, the evening before the full moon, the old town closes to traffic and switches off its electric lighting. What is left is lantern light, candles, and paper lanterns floating down the Hoài River.

It is not staged for visitors. Hội An was a working trading port in the 16th and 17th centuries, taking in Japanese, Chinese and Dutch merchants, and the lanterns have marked the full moon here for a very long time.

One thing worth knowing: it is the 14th night, not the full moon on the 15th. People arrive a day late and miss it entirely.

Vietnam's far north doesn't look like the Vietnam most people picture.

Up in Hà Giang the road climbs to Mã Pí Lèng, a pass cut into limestone at around 1,500 metres, running between the towns of Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc. Below it the Nho Quế river winds through Tu Sản Canyon, with walls dropping close to 800 metres. It is the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia.

Most people who visit Vietnam never come here. It is a long way from the coast and the roads take time.

We should be straight about it: this is not a comfortable few days. If comfort is what you are after, we would send you somewhere else and say so. But if you want the part of Vietnam that has not been smoothed out yet, it is this.
