Once a month, Hội An turns the lights off.

On the 14th night of each lunar month, the evening before the full moon, the old town closes to traffic and switches off its electric lighting. What is left is lantern light, candles, and paper lanterns floating down the Hoài River.

It is not staged for visitors. Hội An was a working trading port in the 16th and 17th centuries, taking in Japanese, Chinese and Dutch merchants, and the lanterns have marked the full moon here for a very long time.

One thing worth knowing: it is the 14th night, not the full moon on the 15th. People arrive a day late and miss it entirely.

Vietnam's far north doesn't look like the Vietnam most people picture.

Up in Hà Giang the road climbs to Mã Pí Lèng, a pass cut into limestone at around 1,500 metres, running between the towns of Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc. Below it the Nho Quế river winds through Tu Sản Canyon, with walls dropping close to 800 metres. It is the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia.

Most people who visit Vietnam never come here. It is a long way from the coast and the roads take time.

We should be straight about it: this is not a comfortable few days. If comfort is what you are after, we would send you somewhere else and say so. But if you want the part of Vietnam that has not been smoothed out yet, it is this.
