Leopard cubs (Panthera pardus) enter the world remarkably vulnerable. Born with their eyes closed and weighing less than one kilogram,
they initially have a soft, greyish coat in which their characteristic spots and rosettes are barely discernible. During these early weeks, their
mother keeps them carefully concealed, frequently moving her cubs between secure den sites to reduce the risk of detection by predators and
other potential threats.
It is this brief and rarely seen stage in a leopard’s life that makes our cover image so special. Our cover photograph was entered into the Amateur
Photo Competition by Liam Galloti. Read his story on page 89.
