Across many destinations now, particularly in Southern Africa and for long haul routes, immigration and border authorities have tightened controls for:
• Unaccompanied minors
Children travelling with one parent only
• Children travelling with adults who are not their biological parents or legal guardians
• Authorities are focused on reducing the risk of child trafficking and abduction.
• Most are aligning around broadly similar requirements:
o Parental consent from both parents or all legal guardians, usually in the form of signed and, in many cases, certified/attested consent letters.
o Supporting documentation such as full/unabridged birth certificates, court orders, death certificates (if one parent is deceased), or adoption/guardianship papers where applicable.
• Rules are enforced at multiple touchpoints: airline check in, departure immigration, and arrival immigration.
Given that the detailed rules, formats and certification requirements can differ by country and change at short notice, the safest practical approach for you is to check with the travel agent in charge of the travel arrangements.
