Eastern Rock Sengis (Elephant Shrews)
28 and 27 May 2026
Khoisan Karoo Conservancy and Marrick Safari, Northern Cape, South Africa

We have been enjoying these amazing little mammals on our 14-Day Rare Mammal Tour. When they run, one would have to think that they are one the fastest land mammals on the planet in terms of speed versus weight ratio.

Bat-eared Fox killing Common Mole-Rat
25 May 2026
Marrick Safari, Northern Cape, South Africa

We watched this Bat-eared Fox (Otocyon megalotis) make a rarely seen kill of what appeared to be a Common Mole-Rat (Cryptomys hottentotus) (could experts please clarify) on last night's game drive.

It spent some time biting and shaking it before jogging away with its substantial prize meal.

Witnessing this was even a first for Ben, Marrick's legendary spotter of many decades.

Manyoni Private Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

We were privileged to encounter this very special mammal on our current rare mammal tour. What a moment.

What a success story in conservation for Zululand Conservation Trust. Well done to Louis and Ruby, the amazing cocker spaniel tracking dog, for locating the awesome Stevie.

Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill (Tockus leucomelas) kill
04 May 2026
Thornybush Game Reserve, Mpumalanga

We arrived to discover a Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill tossing about what appeared to be a musk shrew species, while being mobbed by others. But, it held on and put it down the hatch. It was a surprising and interesting sighting.

We are presently on day 8 of a 13-day tour and have enjoyed some superb sightings, including species such as:

11 African Wild Dogs hunting, 6 Cheetah (including a coalition of 5 males), 2 Black Rhinos, 16 White Rhinos, Jameson's Red Rock Hare, 2 Bushpigs, 2 African Lions, Spotted Hyena, Eastern Rock Sengi (Elephant Shrew), Klipspringer, plenty African Elephant, hundreds of Cape Buffalo, Puff Adder, many more.

A highlight for our principle tour guide, Michael Wright, was his first Jameson's Red Rock Rabbit, which now adds to several prior sightings of Smith's and Hewitt's for him.

Lodges our tour visits include: Buffalo Ridge in Madikwe, The Riverine Lodge in Welgevonden, Greenfire Game Lodge in Balule, Tangala Safari Camp in Thornybush (both Greater Kruger), and Mdluli Safari Lodge in southern Kruger.

Here is a video of a gorgeous Cheetah female I spotted striding onto an open plain in Welgevonden one morning, with her eyes fixed firmly on a herd of Impala for breakfast.
