Winter in the Overberg = canola season! 💛

One of the many highlights of travelling through the Overberg at this time of year is watching the countryside transform into brilliant yellow fields. These vibrant blooms are more than just beautiful—they're an important crop for local farmers, with canola grown for its high-quality cooking oil and animal feed.

It's one of those moments on tour where we just have to pull over to see it up close. Wandering through the flowers, or simply taking in the view, it's a reminder that sometimes the journey is every bit as memorable as the destination.

The Garden Route is spectacular all year round, but winter certainly knows how to put on a show!

Today, in the spirit of Mandela Day, Wendy and Terri from the Earthstompers team spent their 67 minutes giving back at Kuyasa in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch.

Kuyasa is one of the community projects that Earthstompers proudly supports, helping provide meals and care to children in the local communities where our tours take place. We were honoured to lend a hand serving food and spending time with the incredible people who make this initiative possible.

At Earthstompers, we believe the best guides and consultants never stop learning.

Last week, our team stepped away from the office and into the field—just as we do with our guests—to explore, discover, and deepen our understanding of the incredible places we share every day.

During this gathering our learning focus was on human history, the ocean, and the remarkable marine life that shapes our coastline. We spent the day uncovering the fascinating story of early humans along the Cape coast, learning how the ocean influenced our evolution, and gaining first-hand insight into the inspiring conservation work happening right here in the Walker Bay region.

A huge thank you to Marine Dynamics Whale Tours and our exceptional guide, Tim, for sharing your knowledge and passion. Experiences like these remind us that every tour is an opportunity to tell richer stories, inspire curiosity, and help protect the wild places we love.

WHALE SEASON IS ALMOST HERE 🐋

From July to November each year, one of nature's greatest spectacles unfolds along the Whale Coast and Garden Route as Southern Right Whales return from the icy waters of Antarctica to mate, calve, and raise their young in the warmer waters of South Africa.

It's a seasonal phenomenon that locals eagerly await every year, and one we absolutely love sharing with our guests from around the world.

One of the most incredible things about whale watching in South Africa is that you don't necessarily need a boat. Hermanus is widely regarded as one of the best land-based whale watching destinations in the world. Take a stroll along the scenic cliff paths and look out over Walker Bay, where whales can often be seen breaching, tail-slapping, spy-hopping, and nursing their calves just offshore.

For those wanting an even closer encounter, optional boat-based whale watching trips are available, offering sightings of these gentle giants in their natural environment in the deeper ocean.

It’s been one of the busiest few weeks in Earthstompers’ history and we’re feeling incredibly grateful for the opportunity to showcase Southern Africa to guests from all over the world!

In the last 2 weeks, we’ve had the privilege of welcoming travellers from the USA, Germany, Brazil, England, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Ireland, India, Australia, and China.

Our guests have been exploring some of Southern Africa’s most epic landscapes and experiences - handpicked adventures for the ultimate guest experience:

Today we had the pleasure of hosting two groups of tourism students from Boland College.

One group headed off to explore the Whale Coast, while the other soaked up the beauty of the West Coast. Days like this are always special for our team – our guides genuinely love sharing their knowledge, giving a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work in tourism, and (hopefully!) inspiring the next generation of industry pros.

Boland College holds a special place in our story too – it’s where owner of Earthstompers, Hendrik, first studied tourism and where the seed for Earthstompers was planted all those years ago. Full circle moments like this never get old.
