Day 2: Our 4 September trekkers are all trekking well and arrived safely at the beautiful Ofi Creek this afternoon.

This morning they climbed up and over Imita Ridge before walking through the stunning Ua-Ule Creek area. The group climbed up to the top of Ioribaiwa Ridge and then down to Ofi Creek.

Once settled into camp everyone enjoyed a refreshing and well deserved swim.

Day 1: Our 4 September trekkers are all safe at camp at Goodwater campsite.

After meeting their porters and guides at Owers Corner they descended down to Goldie River for their first wet crossing. The team then had a short trek to camp. Everyone is happy to be out on the Owen Stanley Ranges.

There are many places where Australians gather to remember on ANZAC Day.

Standing With Nepal

Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal following the devastating floods that have caused such tragic loss of life and widespread destruction.

Nepal holds a very special place in the Kokoda Spirit family.

Over the years, many of our trekkers have travelled with us to Nepal, walked amongst the Himalayas and experienced firsthand the extraordinary warmth, hospitality and generosity of the Nepalese people.

While our local operator and our trekking operations have not been directly affected, many people throughout the wider communities connected to our friends and colleagues in Nepal have been impacted by this tragedy.

The Government of Nepal has established the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support the ongoing rescue, relief and recovery effort.

ON THIS DAY — 29 AUGUST 1942
PRIVATE BRUCE STEEL KINGSBURY VC

Today, 84 years ago, amid the desperate fighting at Isurava, Private Bruce Steel Kingsbury performed an extraordinary act of courage that would see him posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

The Australian positions were under enormous pressure from repeated Japanese attacks and the situation was becoming critical.

Kingsbury, a member of the 2/14th Battalion, immediately volunteered to join a counter-attack.

Armed with a Bren gun, he charged forward through intense enemy fire, firing from the hip and clearing a path through the advancing Japanese. His actions helped halt the enemy advance and allowed the Australians to regain their position.

Moments later, Bruce Kingsbury was killed by a sniper.

He was just 24 years old.

For his extraordinary bravery, Kingsbury was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross — becoming the first Australian serviceman to receive the VC for actions in Australian territory.

Today his name rests forever amongst the story of Isurava and the Kokoda Campaign.

COURAGE. ENDURANCE. MATESHIP. SACRIFICE.

84 years later, we continue to walk in his footsteps, tell his story and speak his name.
