Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (Outer Banks, North Carolina)

📖 The book:
Part coming-of-age story, part murder mystery, this one follows Kya, a girl who grows up largely alone in the marshes of the North Carolina coast, teaching herself to survive off the land and water around her. The author is actually a wildlife scient and writes the marsh so vividly- the herons, the tides, the way light moves through the reeds. Picture yourself in the landscape and make it happen! It was made into a movie- which did you like better?

📍 The destination:
The book is set in a fictional town, but it draws heavily on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The wild, marshy coastline of barrier islands, quiet channels, and wide-open saltwater flats. Vist to kayak through the marsh, spot herons and egrets, and watch the sun set over the water just like Kya did. It's a slow and wild side of the East Coast--- perfect for anyone who wants nature, not crowds.

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Some of the world's most beloved dog breeds were born in destinations that make for pretty incredible trips of their own:

📍Norway: home of the Norwegian Lundehund, bred with at least six toes on each foot to climb the sea cliffs of the Lofoten Islands. Travelers can hike those same dramatic cliffs, kayak between fjords, and chase the northern lights in the winter months.
📍Japan: birthplace of the Shiba Inu, one of the country's oldest and most iconic breeds. Explore Kyoto's temples and bamboo groves, hike the Japanese Alps, or wander mountain villages where the breed originally worked as a hunting companion.
📍Portugal: where the Portuguese Water Dog once worked alongside fishermen along the Algarve coast. Today that same coastline is all dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and golden-sand beaches...perfect for boat tours, sea caves, and fresh seafood right on the water.
📍Iceland: home to the Icelandic Sheepdog, brought over by Norse settlers centuries ago. Think glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and geothermal hot springs...a landscape as rugged and striking as the dogs bred to work it.

Exciting news for anyone dreaming of a Disney cruise without the flight!

The Beach by Alex Garland (Thailand)

📖The book:
A backpacker in Bangkok gets handed a map to a legendary hidden beach- a secret island paradise, cut off from the tourist trail and ruled by its own small community. What starts as a dream escape slowly turns into something stranger and darker. A book that had me more into the destination than the gripping story itself.

(I still haven't seen the Leonardo DiCaprio movie version. Worth it?)

📍 The destination:
Thailand delivers the fantasy without the fiction's dark turn. The Phi Phi Islands (where the movie was filmed at Maya Bay) have those same limestone cliffs and impossibly turquoise water; Railay Beach and the Andaman coast offer that same secluded, boat-in-only feel. You can island-hop by longtail boat, snorkel over reefs, and watch the sun set over karst formations that look almost too perfect to be real. Thailand has been on my list since college!
