Explore Paris with a guide who knows the city deeply. Architecture, history, and storytelling come together to illuminate some of the city’s most beautiful spaces. One of our visitors called their walk “the perfect start to our trip to Paris.”

Benjamin Franklin was the first American celebrity in Paris! Long before the city became a favorite destination for Americans, it had already fallen in love with one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When Franklin arrived to negotiate France’s support for the American Revolution, he deliberately dressed differently from the French court. While aristocrats wore powdered wigs and embroidered silk, Franklin chose simple clothing to reflect the ideals of the new American republic.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Parisians couldn’t get enough of him. His portrait appeared on medallions, snuffboxes, and decorative objects throughout the city. That’s what 18th-century celebrity looked like.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
250 years ago this week, Franklin was the oldest delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

As the United States marks its 250 years of independence, it’s an ideal time for Paris Muse to celebrate the enduring relationship between our two nations.

Most people know that the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people to commemorate the countries’ alliance, 100 years after the American Revolution. But in what other ways did France contribute to America? And where can you see traces of those exchanges today?

We asked our guide Matthieu Creson, a Parisian born in Philadelphia! With a Franco-American father and a French mother, he’s naturally interested in the two nation’s shared histories. As he notes below, Paris in particular was the site of many events crucial to America’s founding.

Most people know the Statue of Liberty in NY was a gift to the U.S. from France. But did you know that Paris was where it was conceived and constructed? Fittingly, it has several Statues of Liberty of its own.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can spot a 1/4 model version of the monument on the Seine, another in the Luxembourg Gardens, and even a copy inside the Musée d’Orsay. The Musée des Arts et Métiers displays one of the original maquettes used by the artist Bartholdi. They’re all lasting reminders of a friendship that has linked France and America for more than 250 years.

It’s the Parisian house where America was born.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most visitors walk straight past 56 Rue Jacob without a second glance. Yet on this quiet street in Paris, the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, officially ending the American Revolutionary War.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s one of those remarkable Paris places hiding in plain sight: a simple building that helped shape the course of history.
The city is full of stories like this, if you know where to look.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’re marking episodes in the history of Franco-American relations to commemorate America at 250. Check out our blog for more.

Versailles is one of the world’s biggest palaces, so it was literally designed to overwhelm. Our tour offers a calmer, enjoyable approach, combining close looking with a focus on lesser-known sites. Let the rest of the crowds wander aimlessly through gilded galleries! You and your private guide will be looking closely at carefully chosen details, from trompe l’oeil ceilings to garden grotto designs. Your one-on-one interaction with your own expert will give you a meaningful understanding of what you’re seeing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Royal Chapel, Hercules Ballroom, State Apartments, Hall of Mirrors, Le Petit Trianon, and gardens—our tour covers these sites and more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Versailles tells an even bigger story than its size suggests.
