Ever wondered what a mene was? It was a judgment against the 2 Babylonian rulers “Your days are numbered, Nabonidus and Belshazzar”(mene,mene) A mene (mina) was a weight equivalent to 60 shekels. The expression, mene mene tekel parsin literally translated meant 60 shekels, 60 shekels, a shekel weight (tekel) and parsin is 1/2 shekel. It was also a poetic way to say, you have been measured and found short (the 1/2 shekel) parsin or peres. (peres also meant divided) Here is a 1/2 mina weight at the Louvre. It weighs in at 254grams so how heavy was 2 minas? 🤓 you can do the math! It comes very very close to a standard international measurement we still use up until today, 4000 years later!
