Day one of Marjorie & Bill’s multi day tour around the North of Ireland. I picked them up in Dublin and headed north to Meath, Ireland’s spiritual heartland where the high kings of Eire were crowned and Newgrange, a 5000 year old tomb that is older than the pyramids.

We then celebrated our Viking heritage at Slane Castle with the extras from the hit series The Vikings. If you are going to tour Ireland you may as well start from the beginning!

The Belfast workhouse was one of 130 workhouses built in Ireland under the Irish Poor Law of 1838. Ireland was split up into sections called 'Unions' based on population size, usually with a town in the centre.
This is where the workhouse would be located.

The Belfast workhouse was a large model workhouse, capable of accommodating 1,000 paupers. It opened on 11 May 1841.
All workhouses were built to the same design by architect George Wilkinson.
It was designed to keep men & women, adults & children completely separate. This is known as an "architecture of deterrence".

The workhouse was managed by a local Board of Guardians who were partly elected by ratepayers and partly appointed due to their standing in the community.
In 1847 the Guardians expanded the workhouse by erecting a Fever Hospital.
This offered free medical care for infectious diseases like typhus, smallpox, dysentery & the dreaded cholera.

By the 20th century, most of the focus of the workhouse was on the medical relief it was providing. In the new Northern Ireland, workhouses either closed or were repurposed into hospitals.
The Belfast workhouse started to be referred to as the city hospital in the 1940s.
In 1948 it official transferred under the National Health Service & became Belfast City Hospital.
