From the air, the west coast of Pico looks like a maze. It's actually a vineyard.

Since the 15th century, w**egrowers on this volcanic island have built thousands of small plots walled with loose black basalt. The walls shelter the vines from Atlantic wind and salt spray, and the dark stone soaks up the sun and keeps the plots warm. There's almost no soil, so the vines root into cracks in the lava.

UNESCO inscribed the landscape in 2004, and Verdelho from here was exported across Europe and to the Americas. You can walk among the walls on the walking trails and visit the w**e museum in Madalena; the plots themselves are working vineyards.

It's a good reason to give the Azores more than a quick stopover.

Huskies, reindeer, snow-covered forests and that all-important meeting with Father Christmas.

It can be genuinely magical, but getting the location, duration and experiences right makes a huge difference.

✈️ Two flights. Same connection time. Very different levels of risk.

When booking connecting flights, it's easy to focus on the price, total journey time and how long you'll have between flights.

But there's something equally important that often gets overlooked - how your flights are actually booked.

A connection on one through-ticket can offer very different protection from two separately booked flights, particularly if your first flight is delayed.

And that's before considering baggage, immigration, terminal changes and transit requirements.
