Led by expert host Dr Ulrike Ziegler, this Art Pursuits study tour explores how the Reformation reshaped art, faith and society at the dawn of the modern world. Journey through Wittenberg, Weimar, Torgau, Eisenach, Gotha and Schmalkalden, visiting Renaissance palaces, historic churches and outstanding works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Younger at the very heart of the Lutheran Reformation.

A couple of things, really. My father was an architect, so I grew up surrounded by all things architectural. But my special interest in the world of the Ancient Greeks really happened when I was introduced to Homerโ€™s Iliad and Odyssey by an inspirational teacher at my primary school โ€“ all those gods, monsters and heroes were so exciting. And they still are!

Iโ€™ll always remember an extraordinary visit to the Temple of Apollo at Bassai, high up in the mountains of Arcadia in Greece. You ascend through an incredibly beautiful natural environment where eventually your only companions are the goats blocking the road, until you find the temple, which is now preserved under a high-tech tent to protect it from the harshness of the climate. On this occasion, it began to snow just as we arrived. As we sheltered in the tent, exquisite white columns of snow tumbled through the holes in the roof structure, in a silent dialogue with the majestic limestone columns of the building itself. It was awesome, in the true sense of the wordโ€ฆ

When Art Pursuits invited me to lead another tour to Vienna I couldnโ€˜t have been more happy. The architectural splendour of Viennaโ€™s city centre still leaves me speechless every single time I visit. My absolute favourite visit is the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Its picture gallery has an almost unrivalled selection of works by Albrecht Dรผrer. But the Kunsthistorisches Museum also houses the โ€œKunstkammerโ€ where the most spectacular objects of sumptuous art including Celliniโ€™s Saliera are on display. And just before you think you might collapse you can retreat to the museum cafรฉ. Located in a circular space underneath the majestic and opulently decorated cupola of the museum it offers a typically Viennese selection of foods: soups, Schnitzel and Goulash and, above all, a wide range of rich cakes and delicate pastry.

Therefore, Iโ€™m already looking forward to my travel year of 2026 that will take off with the trip to Vienna in late March โ€“ a time of the year, by the way, when the big crowds are not yet there!

From a distance, Mantua rises like a dream. Its mediaeval skyline of towers and battlements is framed by a shimmering ring of water, giving it the ethereal feel of a city floating in time. It was here, in this magical setting, that one of the most glittering courts of Renaissance Italy took shape under the rule of the Gonzaga family. Since claiming lordship in 1328, the Gonzaga transformed Mantua into a cultural powerhouse, a magnet for artists, musicians and writers.

We will explore the hidden treasures in those narrow, atmospheric cobbled lanes and the cultural must-haves lining the city's beautiful piazzas such as the grand Palazzo Ducale or the Palazzo del Te with their world-famous wall paintings. Together with Mantua, the walled town of Sabbioneta became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008. Unlike Mantua that was renewed and extended during the Renaissance, Sabbioneta is the built reality of the periodโ€™s ideas of an ideal city. But just like Mantua, this city is also a testimony to the architectural and artistic ambitions of the Gonzaga family and the role they played in the dissemination of the ideals of the Renaissance.

Absolutelyโ€”there are works I return to every time. Among the โ€˜must seesโ€™ are portraits by Ingres at both the Frick and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. From the 20th century, Iโ€™m especially looking forward to sharing Edward Hopperโ€™s work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, followed by a stroll through his home turf (Greenwich Village) including the studio in Washington Square where he produced some of his most iconic works.
