On my to do list for this week is to visit the newly opened Buxton Museum and Art Gallery to peruse their collections of old photographs. Pictures such as the one below give clues which help us understand the history of the area much better. If you look closely there do not appear to be any trees on what we now call the Slopes and the two trees we can see , with seating around them are probably less than 50 years old. If I’m correct then there were no trees when the Square was being built around 1806 although some sources refer to trees offering shade in the area. There’s always something more to discoverbuxton.
This is a copy of a photo of the Old Hall Hotel in Buxton taken from the Pavilion Gardens, dated 1856.
Buxton Museum and Art Gallery has now reopened and as well as collection items (and a Big Bear), we have a display of framed copies of similar pictures and some albums too. We'd love to welcome you to our new temporary space on the same site as Buxton Library on Kents Bank Road.
