✨ CHESTER TOURIST GUIDE – FURTHER AFIELD ✨

🐇 Was Alice found at Ripon Cathedral? 👀

On a visit to Ripon this week, I discovered one of Yorkshire’s most curious connections to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Lewis Carroll knew Ripon well. His father became a Canon of Ripon Cathedral in 1852, and young Carroll spent considerable time here.

Then look closely at the cathedral’s extraordinary medieval carvings… 👇

🍇 A 15th-century misericord features strange Blemmyes-like creatures — and Ripon Cathedral notes that Carroll’s own drawing of a shrunken Alice looked remarkably like one of these figures.

🐇 Another misericord shows a gryphon chasing a rabbit towards a rabbit hole — a scene thought to have inspired Alice’s famous descent into Wonderland.

👑🐱 And high up in the South Transept, there’s a later, wonderfully curious grinning cat and queen-like figure — although the chronology raises an intriguing question: could this be Wonderland influencing Ripon, rather than the other way around?

And beneath it all… a mysterious ancient crypt.

So perhaps Alice wasn’t found at Ripon Cathedral after all…

But she certainly seems to have left a few clues behind. 🐇✨

🏛️ Magnificent Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire — a truly breathtaking place where centuries of history are written into every stone. 🌿

Founded in 1132, this magnificent Cistercian abbey grew into one of England’s wealthiest monasteries before the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Today, its dramatic ruins sit within the beautiful Studley Royal landscape. 🌳💚

There’s something rather magical about walking through that enormous Gothic arch and imagining the abbey as it once was. ✨

🌿 FURTHER AFIELD: BOLTON ABBEY 🌿

Sometimes I leave Chester behind and go exploring! 🥾🌿

This time, it’s Bolton Abbey in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales — and what a place to discover.

The spectacular ruins of Bolton Priory, founded in 1155, stand beside the River Wharfe, surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in Yorkshire.

There’s also a fascinating connection with the Cavendish family. Bolton Abbey eventually became part of the Cavendish estates through Charlotte Boyle, heiress to the Burlington estates, who married William Cavendish in 1748. The Cavendish family still has strong associations with the estate today.

So, from the history and architecture of Chester to the medieval ruins and landscapes of Yorkshire… there’s always somewhere new to explore! ❤️

🔔 OYEZ! OYEZ! OYEZ!

In Chester Town Criers are taking over the city! 📣

This week, Chester welcomes 25 town criers from 8 nations for the World Town Crier Competition 🌍🔔

But this tradition is nothing new… Chester’s town criers have been proclaiming news here since 1554!

Before social media, radio or TV, this was Chester’s original way of spreading the word. 😄

And where better to do it than the High Cross — right in the heart of the city? ❤️

ONE TOWER. 700 YEARS OF STORIES.

What if I told you Chester’s Water Tower wasn’t always surrounded by trees and city streets? 👀

Built around 1322 it was originally called the New Tower and stood in the River Dee, right beside Chester’s medieval port. 🌊

Chester paid mason John Helpstone £100 to build it — a seriously impressive sum in medieval Chester! 🪎

Then the Dee silted up…
⚔️ The Civil War brought cannon and siege warfare…
🎩 Later, Georgian visitors came to perambulate the medieval walls for pleasure…

And today, we can still step inside this extraordinary survivor during heritage week❤️

Hidden high above the city is one of Chester’s most fascinating secrets — a Victorian Camera Obscura that projects a live, panoramic view of Chester onto a viewing table inside the tower. 🔭✨

It’s a brilliant way to see our city from a completely different perspective!

😺 Why is the Cheshire Cat always grinning? 😁

Ever wondered why Cheshire became famous for its grinning cats? 👀

The Cheshire Cat in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland 🐇🫖 may be the most famous one — but the phrase “grinning like a Cheshire cat” was around long before Lewis Carroll wrote his book.

And with Cheshire once being famous for its dairy farms and Cheshire cheese 🐄🥛🧀, perhaps there was a very simple reason for all those happy smiles… 😉

But there’s an even more intriguing medieval connection… 🐺🏰
