Does gender matter?

It's all about skill, teamwork and nerve

One of the great things about sailing is that gender usually matters far less than skill, teamwork and nerve. Check out these two absolutely cranking it across Vassiliki Bay.

At Wildwind, our instructors currently number 14 men and 9 women—although we reckon the women have collected about twice as many trophies. Not that anyone’s counting. Well, perhaps the women are.

Meet the people behind the whistles.

One of the nice things about the Wildwind team is that teaching sailing isn't the only sailing they do.

This summer alone, members of the team have been or are competing at World and European Championships in Dart 18s, Hobie 16s, 29ers and Moths... before coming straight back to the beach in Vassiliki.

Between our instructors and senior staff there's more than 117 years of teaching experience, 14 national championship titles, a European title and a World Championship.

But the medals aren't really what matters.

The important bit is that they're still curious, still learning and still spending as much time on the water as they possibly can. Whether you're taking your first lesson or trying to master a new class, you'll be sailing with people who genuinely love the sport.

(And yes, the sailing stories get bigger every season...)

Simon and Bryony are preparing themselves for the Hobie 16 Europeans in lake Maubisson in France. Seems like the correct entertainment was arranged for Friday night along with some wine tasting from the Bordeaux region.. gold fleet racing starts on Tuesday.

I never get tired of the views in and around Vassiliki. These were taken 2 evenings ago from the very south of the island of Lefkas with Ithaca and Cephalonia in the background, and then of the west coast beaches from above and sunset from a restaurant in Athani. I've always said that when I get tired of the views I'll leave...can't see that ever happening. Forty years next year since I first drove down here in my VW van towing a Hobie 16. Changed my life for ever! Simon
