🌊☀️ It’s Drowning Prevention Week! 🚤🛟

This vital campaign by the Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK is here to raise awareness and help everyone enjoy the water safely — because sadly, many drownings are preventable.

Did you know...
🔹 Half of accidental drownings in the UK happen between May and August?
🔹 Over a third occur at weekends?
🔹 Alcohol or drugs are involved in 22% of these tragic cases?
🔹 And shockingly, child drowning deaths in England have doubled in the last 5 years?

As the summer season arrives and thousands head to the coast, it’s more important than ever to take simple, life-saving steps — whether you’re swimming, crabbing, paddling or rockpooling.

Before your visit, check out these top safety tips:

✅ Enter the water slowly and carefully.
✅ Stay within reach of others.
✅ Children (and grown-ups!) must always be supervised.

And remember — in an emergency:
📞 Call 999
🛟 Float to live, and call for help.

Many drowning incidents can be avoided with the right knowledge and preparation. Before your next coastal adventure, take time to teach these essential skills — they could save a life.

A fascinating glimpse into the history of Ilfracombe!

A moment captured forever in Ilfracombe, Devon in 1890.

Ilfracombe is a picturesque seaside town located on the North Devon coast in England, with a history that dates back to at least the Iron Age.

The area was originally settled by the Celts, and its name is believed to derive from the Old English "Alfreinscoma," meaning the valley of Alfred's people.

In the medieval period, Ilfracombe developed as a fishing and trading port, taking advantage of its natural harbor. The town played a role in various historical events, including being a point of departure for ships during the Crusades.

By the 13th century, Ilfracombe had become an important port for the wool trade and a base for privateers and pirates.

During the 19th century, Ilfracombe transformed into a popular Victorian seaside resort. The construction of the railway in 1874 made the town more accessible, leading to a boom in tourism.

Landmarks like the Ilfracombe Pier, the Landmark Theatre, and the Torrs Walks were developed during this period. The town's natural beauty, including its dramatic cliffs and beaches, attracted visitors seeking the health benefits of the sea air and water.
