Five glimpses of an island that never stops surprising me.

I’ve travelled these roads countless times, through every season and in every kind of weather. Yet somehow, the Isle of Skye still manages to make me feel like I’m seeing it for the very first time.

Some places you visit. Others stay with you.

There are places that make you feel small.

And then there’s Skye.

Mother and son Amy and Michael began their two-day adventure in Inverness, journeying across the Scottish Highlands before boarding the only working turntable ferry in the world for the crossing over the sea to Skye.

But this trip was always going to be about getting out into it.

At the Quiraing, the weather closed in. The waterproofs went on. The trail got muddy. And beneath those enormous cliffs, Amy and Michael became two tiny figures moving through one of Scotland’s most extraordinary landscapes.

That’s what I love about some of these photographs. Look closely and you’ll find them — dwarfed by ridges, rock faces and huge Highland skies.

No photograph can really capture the scale of the Quiraing.

But swipe through these and you might just get a sense of it.

There were Highland cows, Sligachan Old Bridge, plenty of rain, plenty of laughs and eventually a long road south to Edinburgh.

But that hike? 🥾🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
