Discover Inverness: A Walking Tour in Support of the Old High
Join Cath, a local Inverness tour guide, for a circular walking tour starting and finishing at the historic Old High Church.
Along the way, you’ll explore some of the city’s best-known landmarks, including the Victorian Market, Inverness Town House, Inverness Castle and the beautiful River Ness.
Back at the Old High Church, volunteers will share an update on plans for the building and explain how you can help support its future.
Tour Information
• Starting and finishing point: Old High Church, Inverness
• Distance: Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles)
• Duration: Approximately 2 hours
• Accessibility: Suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. There is an incline on the approach to Inverness Castle; the remainder of the route is on level ground.
• Weather: The tour will run in all but extreme weather conditions. If it must be cancelled, we will let you know as soon as possible. Please dress for the Scottish weather and wear suitable footwear—kilts are good in all weathers!
Supporting the Old High
The tour is free, but a minimum donation of £10 to the Old High is suggested. Every contribution will help preserve this important part of Inverness’s heritage.
Alternatively, you can become a member of the Old High for just £15 per year.

🏛️ Behind the doors of Inverness Town House… lies a treasure trove of Highland history!
It’s one of the most recognisable buildings in Inverness, but there’s so much more to discover than its impressive Victorian Gothic exterior.
Step inside and you’ll find a magnificent hall, beautiful stained-glass windows, glittering chandeliers and fascinating stories from the city’s past.

📜 Learn about the historic Cabinet meeting held here in 1921, when political decisions made in Inverness helped shape the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

Its support has helped make these special Town House tours possible, giving residents and visitors the chance to explore a building that many have only admired from the street.

Want to find out more about the Old High?

The Old High Inverness is having an open evening on Tuesday 20th at 6pm – a chance to find out how things are going and – all being well – to celebrate the recommissioning of the heating system! Thanks to a generous donation from the
Rotary Club of Inverness, the much admired old gas boiler should be back on line in time for the coming winter – but bringing a warm coat to the open night might still be a sensible precaution!

The Old High has been opening for a few hours 2 or 3 days a week and has welcomed over 3000 people through the door from nearly 70 different countries! Our Chair, Jean Slater, is delighted at the reaction from visitors :

“We have hugely enjoyed meeting so many people, and the visitors book is full of praise for this gem of a building and the story it tells. With more volunteers and a few modifications to the building the numbers could easily double”

The famous Father Willis Organ has been played regularly in recent months and the plan is to ’let it speak’ at Tuesday’s meeting for those who come along - and there will be refreshments on offer.
And if that’s not enough there will be an opportunity to sign up as ‘members’ of the new SCIO. With the City of Culture bid in the running for shortlisting we have asked Bryan Beattie to join us and share ideas on how the Old High could become a major venue in 2029.
