The Falk brothers came to Steel City (Sheffield) for a Roots Trip. They had come from London and Boston USA. We visited sites across the city including the old family homestead and the cemetery where family members are buried. Roots Trips are great fun - they take time to organise but are always worthwhile.

Devere House in Little Germany, Bradford was the headquarters of a company that traded with the USA in the late 19th century. The American Eagle over the doorway is a reminder of that link. A whole group who had attended Bradford University to read Modern Languages in the early 1970s came back for a 50th anniversary reunion. Ray came back to Bradford from Californa. Here he is outside Devere House.

Trish came from Wellington, New Zealand in search of her roots. Her grandfather left Bradford in 1906 to make a new life in NZ.

On her return to Bradford, Trish stayed in an upmarket Airbnb in Saltaire. We visited addresses Trish had where the family lived in Bradford and went to Manningham Mills where the great strike of 1896 was the catalyst for the formation of the Independent Labour Party (ILP). Trish's grandfather was an ILP activist.

I always enjoy Roots Tours and I've got to do some more research now on Yorkshire migrants to New Zealand. Pictured are Trish, her son and Trish's partner in Saltaire.

Aline Russell came down from Scotland with her husband to walk in the footsteps of her great grandfather Victor Edelstein who had come to Bradford in 1870 from Germany. Victor was a stuff merchant dealing in wool and was also the German Consul in the City when Bradford was the Wool Capital of the World. Victor's life in Bradford started staying at the Great Victoria Hotel along with a number of other German Jewish Merchants before he moved to Oaklands a villa in Manningham. The picture is taken in the Great Victoria Hotel where there are wonderful pictures of Bradford's past. Victor was in partnership with the 'Grand Philanthropist' Jacob Moser who funded the Hertzl Moser Jewish Hospital in Leeds and the Herzliya Gymnasia in Tel Aviv.

To start the year off we had a Heritage Walk around Little Germany and the City Centre on Sunday morning January 12th. Even though there was snow on the ground we had a great morning walk for a group of friends from Burley-in-Wharfedale. We'll be walking again throughout the year and the walks offered include Little Germany, the Bradford City Centre, Bradford's Jewish Heritage Trail, Lister Park and the Merchant's Villas, the Mills of Saltaire along the Leeds Liverpool Canal. If you have a group and want your own tour, please pm. I'm looking forward to meeting friends old and new this year. Nigel Grizzard

Bradford 2025 started with 2 wonderful events this weekend in City Park. We were there on Saturday night along with 10,000 plus people to enjoy the magician Steven Frayne (formerly known as Dynamo). It may have been a bit cold but the organisation the atmosphere was excellent and after a hot coffee at the end I felt warmed up. I'm running a whole programme of walks in and around Bradford and Saltaire so if you want to organise a group walk for you and your friends please pm me.

Adam Gefen was awarded a scholarship by the Jewish Historical Society of England for his Ph.D thesis on the 'Yiddishe Suit'. He came to Leeds this week to research and see what is left of the Tailoring Industry. Even though the weather was rough I was able to take him on a tour yesterday to see some of the remaining memories. Adam hopes to come back when the weather is better to talk to people who worked in the Industry. The picture shows Adam getting some practical experience on the sewing machine in Grand Arcade.
