Today is National Thank a Teacher Day — a chance to remember the teachers who encouraged, inspired or quietly changed the direction of our lives.
One such teacher was the Reverend William Taylor, headmaster of Hawkshead Grammar School in the 1780s. Among his pupils was a young William Wordsworth, who later remembered him in his autobiographical poem ‘The Prelude’ as, “An honoured teacher of my youth”

Taylor encouraged Wordsworth not only to read poetry, but to write it. William Taylor died tragically young, aged just 32, and is buried at Cartmel Priory. Eight years later, Wordsworth visited his grave and recalled the teacher who had helped him begin as a poet. This quiet but important story was recently marked at Cartmel Priory with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Professor Stephen Gill, one of the leading Wordsworth scholars and Emeritus Professor at the University of Oxford.

It is a lovely reminder that even the greatest writers do not emerge in isolation. Somewhere near the beginning, there is often a teacher.

There is never a bad time to visit Cumbria, but if gardens are your thing then May is the perfect time for Cumbria and the Lake District. The Azaleas and Rhodedendrons are outstanding and the Meconopsis Blue Himalayan Poppies are in their prime as well.

When away from the Lake District I always seem to stumble upon a Lake District link. This time at St Mary Abbotts Church, Kensington. Built in 1872 to a design by George Gilbert Scott, (who co-incidentally also designed St Mary’s Church in Ambleside). It was the parish church of probably the best known Lake District resident, Beatrix Potter and it was here in 1913 that she married William Heelis.

The church claims to have the tallest church spire in London and is classed as a Victorian gothic masterpiece. Lovely and quiet and contemplative when I visited. Well recommended if you are in Kensington, it’s just a short walk from High St Kensington Tube station.

Great to see some Cumbria / Lake District legends on my wander through London’s (Southwark) Herdwick lamb and Cumbrian Chicken. Plus Sticky Toffee Pudding (which Cumbria can lay claim to)

I just loved the classic understatement on Doug Scott’s boots, zoom in, it says “….it is believed that Doug wore these boots in 1977 on the Ogre. The heavy wear on the toes supports this… caused whilst crawling down from the summit with two broken legs!
