A five star rating tells you nothing about how a hotel treats a woman alone.
It tells you about thread count and turndown. It does not tell you whether the restaurant seats you by the kitchen door, whether the front desk hands you your key or announces your room number across the lobby, whether anyone decides a woman at dinner by herself must be waiting for the rest of her party.
That is what I go and check. Three in Panama passed.
Isla Palenque, for the week with nothing scheduled. Eight casitas, eight guests. I have never been received better anywhere, on my own or otherwise.
Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, for the woman who wants the old town at her feet and a room that still feels like a retreat when she closes the door.
The turndown service, after an evening at a speakeasy in the attic of a historic mansion, was my favorite treat!
Hotel La Compañía, for the trip where the building is part of the reason you came. There is history at every corner. This is a hotel where you truly experience the area without ever leaving the hotel.
Save this for whenever Panama moves from someday to a date.
