I’ve been scoring hotels.

Not stars, and not the lobby. I score a hotel on how it treats a woman who’s traveling on her own, and I publish the accessibility facts most luxury hotels leave off their websites entirely.

It started with a night in Nashville. I’d been packing a house all day and there was nowhere left to sleep in it, so I checked into a hotel downtown a little after nine. At half past nine they sent up the full menu, not the four sandwiches you usually get after nine, and I ate the tuna tartare and the chocolate cake and went to bed feeling like a person.

That isn’t remarkable if you’re two people at seven o’clock. It’s everything if you’re one woman at nine thirty.

So I wrote the list down. It’s 45 things now, in five groups, with a pass mark and a fail. Some hotels aren’t going to pass, and I’m publishing those too, because a list where everyone wins is an advertisement.
