🔐 Our Secret War Tour – What a fascinating tour! 🇬🇧

Last week, we explored one of the most extraordinary and closely guarded stories of the Second World War on our Secret War Tour, discovering the incredible work carried out at Bletchley Park to crack Germany’s encrypted messages.

With expert guidance from Dr Mark Baldwin, we delved into the world of wartime codebreakers, uncovering how their intelligence helped change the course of the war and how their pioneering work ultimately contributed to the development of the world’s first programmable digital electronic computer, Colossus.

From the remarkable achievements of Alan Turing and his fellow codebreakers to the lasting legacy of their work, it was a truly fascinating insight into a secret world that remained hidden for decades.

🇦🇱 Greetings from Albania! 🇦🇱

Last week, we were delighted to be exploring the beautiful sights of Albania with Sarisbury Green Arts Society, discovering a wonderful mix of history, culture, stunning scenery and local charm.

✨ Highlights from the journey so far:

⛴️ A scenic hydrofoil crossing to Sarandë, followed by a warm welcome and dinner.

🏛️ Butrint – a fascinating guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, uncovering layers of ancient history.

🌅 Lekursi Castle – enjoying spectacular views overlooking Sarandë and the coastline.

🏰 Vlorë – exploring the Independence Monument, Muradie Mosque, Zvernec Monastery and Kaninë Castle.

🏘️ Gjirokastër – discovering the impressive castle, Ethnographic Museum and charming Bazaar Quarter in this historic stone-built city.

💙 The Blue Eye Spring – marvelling at the crystal-clear waters and beautiful natural surroundings of this remarkable spring.

🌍THE TWO MACEDONIAS 🇲🇰🇬🇷

Last week our travellers have followed the fascinating story of two Macedonias — two neighbouring regions sharing a name, yet each with its own distinct history, culture and identity.

From the hilltop fortresses and historic streets of Skopje, to the dramatic beauty of Matka Canyon, our journey through North Macedonia revealed layer upon layer of history.

And then there’s Lake Ohrid — one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, stretching between North Macedonia and Albania. With its extraordinary ecosystem and remarkable cultural heritage, it’s a place where nature and history meet at every turn. 🌊

Our journey continued to Heraclea, founded by Philip II, before crossing the border into Greece and arriving in West Macedonia, with the welcoming town of Florina as our base.

What a wonderful time our travellers had exploring the breathtaking Aeolian Islands, a captivating archipelago off the north coast of Sicily where ancient traditions, dramatic volcanic landscapes and island life come together.

Comprising seven unique islands, the Aeolian archipelago has a fascinating history stretching back to the Neolithic age. With its unhurried pace of life and timeless charm, it’s easy to see why this extraordinary setting was chosen for the much-loved film Il Postino. 🎬
