Blue Skies & Sunnies

Blue Skies & Sunnies My name is Ruth De Avila and I'm an experienced independent travel expert at Travel Counsellors It was inevitable that I would build my career in travel.

I found my love for seeing the world when I was young, so life to me has always been a series of unique journeys. I am passionate about creating sensational holidays and amazing memories.

I've been in the industry since folding t-shirts for my brother's tour operator business more than 30 years ago. I have been an independent travel expert since 2006.

My professional goal has always been very simple: to offer my clients the best of everything!

Wishing everyone celebrating a very happy and peaceful Rosh Hashanah.

A new year is always a good time to pause, look back at the year that’s been and look forward to what’s ahead.

Here’s to good health, happiness, time with the people we love and, of course, plenty of adventures along the way.

Shanah Tovah from me and Blue Skies and Sunnies🥰🥰🥰

The last bank holiday before Christmas… and schools are back next week.
Which means, whether we like it or not, it’s time to start thinking about the next holiday!
If you’re planning to travel during the school holidays, now is a good time to start looking — especially if you have your heart set on a particular hotel, room type or destination.
And here’s a little tip if you’re planning around the Jewish holidays…
Passover doesn’t fall at the same time as Easter, which can make a big difference to pricing.
For April travel, that can mean some much better-value long-haul options than travelling during the peak Easter period — and it’s well worth looking at the dates before assuming Easter is the only option.
That’s where I come in.
I’m Ruth, an independent travel expert with over 30 years’ experience. Tell me where you’d like to go, what you’d like to spend and what your family needs, and I’ll do the searching, comparing and organising for you.
No endless scrolling. No trying to work out which hotels are actually good for families. And no juggling a dozen tabs while getting everyone back into the school routine!
Thinking about April, summer or even further ahead? Let’s have a chat.

World Elephant Day

Back at Elephant Hills for my third visit, and I noticed something quite different this time.

There’s no longer any touching or feeding the elephants. We prepare their food, then they eat at their own pace.

And when you realise an elephant can eat up to 200kg of food a day, that’s a serious amount of bananas!

Spending time with these incredible animals is always a privilege. They’re huge, intelligent, social and completely fascinating to watch.

On World Elephant Day, it’s worth remembering that sometimes the best way to care for these magnificent animals is to give them space to be elephants.

Three visits in, and I think I appreciate that more than ever.

36 YEARS!

This month marks 36 years since I first stepped into the travel industry.

It all began in my brother's pioneering LGBT tour operator business. I started by folding T-shirts, before moving into sales and management, never imagining where that first job would lead.

Working in travel in the 1990s taught me something I've never forgotten: every client is different, every journey is personal, and the best holidays start with really listening.

Fast forward 36 years, and although the destinations have changed, one thing hasn't. I still love helping people create memories they'll treasure for a lifetime.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted me to be part of your adventures over the years. Here's to the next chapter.

After easing into my South Island adventure with Christchurch, Arthur's Pass, Franz Josef, dreamy lakes and gold-rush towns, it was time for the next chapter.

Queenstown lived up to its reputation as New Zealand's adventure capital, although I was just as happy slowing the pace with a lakeside sauna and a glass of Central Otago wine. From there, the journey took me to the unforgettable Milford Sound, where waterfalls tumbled down towering cliffs and the scenery was every bit as spectacular as I'd imagined.

There were glow worms, magnificent albatrosses, windswept coastlines and nights spent beneath some of the clearest skies I've ever seen. Every stop felt completely different, yet each one reminded me why New Zealand is one of those destinations that stays with you long after you've returned home.

If you're dreaming of a holiday that combines breath-taking landscapes, incredible wildlife, great food and wine, and unforgettable experiences, the South Island really does deliver.

Part 2 of my Southern Wonders blog is now live, and I'd love to know which part you'd add to your own itinerary.

South Island dreaming… ✨

From punting on the River Avon in Christchurch to crossing the Southern Alps, gazing at glaciers, drifting along the Haast River and falling a little bit in love with Wānaka, Hāwea, Lake Dunstan and Arrowtown – New Zealand’s South Island has completely stolen my heart.

I’m talking trams, punting, mountain passes, those unbelievably blue lakes and a gold‑rush town that feels straight out of a film set.

If this has you daydreaming about your own New Zealand escape, I’d love to help you plan a trip that feels just as magical, but completely tailored to you.
