Looking to discover a different, quieter side to Italy? Whilst Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan draw the crowds, these 'second cities' are less visited yet rich in history, culture, architecture and gastronomy.

In the north, the Baroque city of Turin has a wonderful setting on the banks of the River Po, with a backdrop of the Italian Alps. There are over 30 excellent museums to choose from, and in the the surrounding countryside you will find Barolo vineyards and Alba white truffles. Trieste is a fascinating city shaped by its Austro-Hungarian past, with grand piazzas, Roman ruins, and Byzantine architecture. Be sure to take the ferry across the bay to the Venetian town of Muggia!

Further south, you will find Bologna, also known as The Red City, which has remained untouched for centuries. This city is best explored through its culinary traditions and with Modena and Parma nearby, it is a perfect place for foodies.

Lastly, we recommend vibrant Naples for its winding alleys, historic piazzas and impressive palazzos. Don't forget the museum of Capodimonte, where you can see works by Caravaggio and Raphael, as well as Teatro San Carlo, Italy's oldest opera house.

Stellar performances, dinner by private chefs, and breathtaking views—this is what our Italian expert Ignacio (Nacho) enjoyed during his recent trip to the Verona Opera Festival. Staying in central Verona, he took a private Kirker walking tour of the UNESCO Roman city and was lucky enough to sit in the Royal Box after a special pre-show dinner. From seeing Juliet’s balcony, to enjoying delicious local cuisine and then ending the trip in Lake Garda with stunning views all around, it was an unforgettable experience that Ignacio highly recommends. To read the full review, click the link in our bio or visit our website.

The festival was created in 1913 to celebrate the centenary of Verdi's birth with a production of Aida. The opera festival continues to run from 11 June to 13 September 2027 - to book for next year, simply speak to a member of our team who can secure you tickets and tailor-make your short break to suit you.

We have enjoyed many special events this summer with our clients,
including our magnificent summer concerts at Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire and the Hospital of St. Cross in Wi******er.

Our Broughton Concert began with tours of the castle, before we enjoyed an excellent performance from double bassist Levi Andreassen and the Sacconi Quartet. We were delighted to have donated £4,000 in ticket sales to the Banburyshire Advice Centre – a vital service for local people. The Sacconi Quartet will be performing again at the Kirker Music Festival in Madeira in November.

Meanwhile, the Hospital of St.Cross provided a memorable setting as ever with its beautiful walled gardens and mediaeval architecture. We are pleased to have raised £2,500 in donations for St. Cross, with many thanks to our clients. The programme was a glimpse into what guests can expect from the Kirker Music Festival in Tenerife, taking place in January 2027, where Levi and members of Ensemble 360 will be joining us.

Snapshots of Porto ☀️ Our Kirker Concierge, David, has just returned from a wonderful short break in Porto, and cannot recommend it enough. With traditional architecture, excellent restaurants, and a thriving arts scene, there is plenty to entice you.

Porto is synonymous with the fortified wine that originated
here. A day spent leisurely cruising the Douro River cruise is a must, with picturesque scenery and a winery tour and tasting from the famous port houses such as Grahams, Dows and Taylors. Bookworms may be eager to browse the shelves at Livaria Lello, one of the world’s most breathtaking bookshops, and perhaps conclude your day by enjoying an evening listening to the soulful sounds of traditional Fado music. This is a hilly labyrinth of a city, with plenty of narrow cobbled streets that meander down to the city’s edge – what better pick me up than a freshly baked pastel de nata or a delicious local dish from the Mercado do Bolhão?

Spanish culture is vibrant and diverse, with lively fiestas and religious parades taking place throughout the year across the country. How many of these iconic fiestas can you identify? Read below to see how many you guessed correctly ⬇️

1. 🍅 La Tomatina
📍Bunol, Valencia
🕑️ last Wednesday in August
Said to be the biggest food fight in the world, the festival originated in the town square during a 'Giants and Big-Heads' parade. When one costume head fell off, the participant flew into a fit of rage that it sent a market stall of vegetables to fly into the air, leading locals to pelt each other with tomatoes until the police intervened.

2. ✝️ La Semana Santa
📍Nationwide
🕑️ The week before Easter
Translating to 'Holy Week' this is observed throughout Spain during the week leading up to Easter, it is a time of devotion and reflection. It blends cultural tradition with religious observances and some spectacular floats, parades and costumes.

3. 🎇 Las Fallas
📍Valencia
🕑️ March 15-19
Las Fallas dates back to a tradition among local carpenters, who burned the wooden structures used to support their winter lamps to celebrate the arrival of spring. Over time, these bonfires evolved into elaborate human-like figures called ninots, which often have a political or satirical meaning.

4. 🐂 San Fermín
🕑️ July 6 - 14
📍Pamplona, Navarre
A week-long celebration that honours Saint Fermin, the city's patron saint and is famous worldwide for the running of the bulls, where participants run in front of bulls to the bullring. Daily bullfights take place as well as religious processions.
