This week, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual spring lecture at the Royal Geographical Society in aid of the Venice of Peril Fund. Guests enjoyed a prosecco reception before a fascinating lecture by travel writer Sara Wheeler, author of the newly-released biography 'Jan Morris: A Life', which has garnered critical acclaim. Jan Morris’s Venice topped bestseller lists around the world in 1960, becoming one of the best-loved accounts of the city. Wheeler's talk shone a new light on Morris' relationship to this beloved city, her career as a travel writer as well as the nuances of her personal identity.

For those considering a short break with a cooler climate this summer, why not consider Iceland or Finland. With spectacular landscapes, volcanic thermal baths and breathtaking wildlife, a visit to Iceland is truly extraordinary. The summer months bring 24-hour daylight and reveal a dramatic variety of wildlife and scenery from whales and arctic birds in the north, to the lunar landscapes of the south marked with glaciers and volcanoes. Kirker can arrange a number of fantastic excursions for you throughout your stay - a visit to the Golden Circle is a must.

Finland in August is particularly exciting as you will witness the beloved crayfish festivals, devoted to the pleasures of eating and drinking. The harbour city of Helsinki is a wonderful mix of modern architecture, glorious Art Nouveau buildings and fascinating museums.

A fresh Nordic summer is now a perennial favourite for discerning travellers looking to enjoy cooler weather during the summer months. Sweden's capital Stockholm is one of the world's most elegant capitals – where fishermen cast for salmon in the clean waters below the Royal Palace. Small ferries are often the best way to reach the attractions, like Skansen, the world's oldest open-air museum, or the magnificent Vasa Museum. You may also wish to visit Copenhagen, founded in 1167, it is a hub for design, science, astronomy and Viking heritage, with museums — including an observatory reflecting Bauhaus and minimalist aesthetics — and the Kirker Concierge can recommend top restaurants, jazz clubs and concerts. In addition, Norway offers striking contrasts — towering peaks, deep fjords, southern cities and Arctic wilderness linked by a dramatic coastline; spring and summer bring wildlife and the midnight sun.

The 'Coolcation' trend has soared in popularity for those looking for a cooler break during the summer. From the Baltic and Nordic States, there are plenty destinations you can visit this summer that provide a rich variety of culture, nature, art and music - not to mention long daylight hours.

There are many destinations to consider, but we can highly recommend the Baltic States Trilogy. Whether you're drawn to the music and Art Nouveau architecture of Riga, the mediaeval streets of Tallinn or the art galleries and churches of Vilnius, we highly recommend each of these cities or, even better, a combined trip to all three 🕌🖼️✨

Our expert team would be delighted in helping you craft a tailor-made itinerary accompanied with cultural excursions and recommendations.

Venice is a city like no other, you'll never forget being whisked across the sparkling lagoon in a water taxi to your hotel, walking into the mosaic splendour of the Basilica di San Marco, or taking a gondola ride whilst the sun sets. From the Rialto Bridge to St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace, there are plenty of historic monuments to discover. Yet, there is also a sense of wonder to be found in wandering the hidden street corners and tucked-away squares, where you will find colourful facades, quaint bookshops and artisan ateliers, as well as the distinctive buzz of those districts still home to local residents, such as Dorsoduro.

Whether you've been once or countless times, there's always something new to discover and any short break to Venice will be enhanced by expert advice from the Kirker Concierge, who can help with the best restaurants and perhaps one of our excellent local guides.
