Today I’m not going to post any deals, or any of my usual real-life silliness.

Today, for me, is about taking a moment to remember what happened 25 years ago.

I was 19 at the time, fresh out of college and working for United Airlines as a reservations agent. I was actually off that Tuesday. I’d gone to my mum’s house and, like so many people, sat watching in absolute horror as the events unfolded on the news.

I remember trying to get hold of my wonderful boss to let him know what was happening, because the team in the office at Gatwick didn’t have a clue what was going on. They just knew the phone lines were becoming completely unmanageable.

This was before the internet was in our hands or our pockets. Before instant updates, social media and being able to find out what was happening with the tap of a screen.

The weeks that followed were intense. We were working 12-hour shifts, there were no real breaks, and food was being brought to our desks because there simply wasn’t time to stop.

I don’t say that negatively. If anything, I’m incredibly proud of the way our small team pulled together and did whatever little bit we could to help.

I can still remember the conversations we had with families calling to ask about loved ones who had been on board two of the planes that were lost. The actual wording of what we had to say.

Some things stay with you.

25 years on, I still think about the people who lost their lives, the families who lost someone they loved, and all those who were left to pick up the pieces afterwards.

Today isn’t about politics, opinions or arguments.

It’s simply about remembering.

Remembering the lives lost.
Remembering the families.
Remembering the ordinary people who found themselves in an unimaginable situation.

And remembering that behind every number, every name and every headline was a real person with people who loved them.

25 years on, we remember.
