🚪 For more than 700 years, Newgate Prison was one of London's most feared places.

Known as "Hell on Earth", it held everyone from debtors and petty thieves to pirates, political prisoners and even children. Overcrowding, disease and corruption made Newgate a symbol of Britain's harsh justice system, and for many, entering its gates meant they would never leave alive.

Although the prison closed in 1902, its chilling legacy can still be discovered around the Old Bailey and St Sepulchre-without-Newgate Church.

Although many feared the project, thousands of curious visitors paid to explore this incredible feat of Victorian engineering. Even famous names like actress F***y Kemble and Anne Lister were captivated by what they saw.

The museum still preserves remarkable artefacts—from delicate paper models created to raise funds to dramatic sketches showing the tunnel after devastating floods.

Although Pride and Prejudice became a huge success, Austen had already sold the copyright to her publisher. As a result, the publisher earned around three times more than she did.

Would you have taken one of medieval London's highest-paid jobs?

Gong farmers were responsible for cleaning out toilets and latrines—a filthy but essential job that kept medieval London functioning. Despite the awful working conditions, they earned around 50% more than skilled stonemasons and carpenters!

Sometimes, the dirtiest jobs came with the biggest rewards.
