Over the coming weeks, Africa Expert () will be revisiting the Okavango Delta, exploring some of our long standing favourite properties alongside a number of exciting new developments shaping Botswana’s safari scene.

One of the things we value most as an independent, employee owned company is the freedom to explore beyond a single portfolio. It allows us to experience a wide variety of camps, styles and safari areas firsthand, ensuring every recommendation we make is based on genuine understanding and finding the right fit for each client.

During his trip, Dave will be visiting a dozen properties across the Delta, each with its own distinct personality and style of safari. Experiencing these camps firsthand means our advice is never based on guesswork or obligation to fill numbers, but on real experience, honest insight and a deep understanding of what different travellers are actually looking for.

Included in the itinerary are:
🌊4 Rivers, one of the Delta’s most exciting newer camps, offering access to a region where exceptional predator viewing meets a genuinely wild and uncrowded safari experience
⛺Nxabega Under Canvas, one of this year’s most anticipated openings, combining &Beyond’s renowned guiding and service with a more intimate and authentic safari style
🐆Maxa, opened last year and already receiving attention for its understated design, exceptional guiding potential and access to a wonderfully wild part of the Delta
🌿Amber River, a camp quietly building a reputation as one of Botswana’s most interesting emerging properties
🦁Mombo, still regarded by many as the benchmark for luxury safaris in Botswana, with few camps able to rival its consistency for guiding, service and extraordinary big game viewing

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing honest insights from the ground, including the camps that genuinely stand out, how the different concessions compare, and what makes each corner of the Delta feel entirely unique.

From Managing Director time in Volcanoes National Park, one thing stood out more than anything else.

It’s not the trek itself, or even the anticipation as you move through the forest. It’s the moment you first come across them.

There’s a stillness to it that is difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it. You’re just a few metres away, completely unguarded, watching a family of mountain gorillas go about their day as if you aren’t there at all.

What our Africa Experts often come back to is not just the encounter itself, but how considered the whole experience is. The pacing of the trek, the expertise of the trackers, and the way everything is done with a quiet respect for the animals and the environment they live in.

It’s this combination of access and restraint that makes Rwanda so distinctive.

David Attenborough has returned to these forests in his latest documentary, A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough, revisiting the same landscapes that first brought mountain gorillas to global attention. What has changed over time is not the feeling of being there, but the protection and care that now surrounds it.

Having been on the ground recently, what stays with Ted most is how composed the experience feels. Nothing rushed, and nothing staged. Just time, patience, and proximity to something that feels very grounded in its own rhythm.

If Rwanda is something you’ve ever considered, we’re always happy to share what it’s actually like from recent first hand experience.

The Serengeti is often spoken about through the lens of the wildebeest migration. Extraordinary as that story is, it is only one part of what makes this ecosystem so remarkable.

Olmara sits in a very different corner of the park, in the eastern Serengeti where the plains feel quieter, wilder, and far less travelled. This is a landscape shaped not by seasonal crowds, but by exceptional resident wildlife and a real sense of space.

Its position is what makes it so special.

From here, guests have access to some of the finest big cat viewing in the Serengeti, particularly cheetah and lion across the open grasslands and granite kopjes nearby. Sightings are often intimate and unhurried, with fewer vehicles and a feeling of having the wilderness to yourself.

For those looking to experience the Serengeti beyond its most famous headline moments, Olmara offers something rarer: a chance to see the park at its most natural, and perhaps its most rewarding.

If you’re looking for a safari that offers some of the best big cat sightings in Africa, look no further than Sabi Sands.

Sabi Sands is arguably the finest private game reserve in Africa for big cat viewing. Sharing an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, the reserve is home to leopard and lion in remarkable density, and the quality of sightings here is unlike almost anywhere else on the continent.

For Africa Expert Dave Fuller's () trip in November, spending a week in Sabi Sands provided viewing of over 100 big cats. It was the lions that left a particular impression. Across the week he encountered several large, distinct lion prides, each with their own territory and character. Combined with the prolific leopard sightings that Sabi Sands is famous for, the week amounted to an extraordinary catalogue of encounters that very few destinations in Africa could match.

Last week, Africa Expert celebrated seven years with Africa Odyssey.

Marking the occasion in true fashion, he took to the skies over the Serengeti on a hot air balloon, a perspective that never fails to remind us just how extraordinary this landscape is.

What makes this moment even more special is the timing. Visiting the Serengeti in the green season offers a completely different experience to the peak months. The plains are lush and vibrant, wildlife is abundant following the calving season, and the atmosphere feels quieter, more exclusive, and wonderfully unhurried.

It is a time when the landscape feels at its most alive, and for those in the know, one of the most rewarding times to travel.

Seven years on, Sam’s first-hand knowledge and passion for Africa continue to shape the journeys we create every day.

Why choosing an independent travel company matters 👇

Choosing the right lodges is one of the most important decisions when designing a safari, and it is where truly independent advice matters most.

As an independent company, we are not tied to specific properties or portfolios. Our recommendations are shaped solely by firsthand experience and a deep understanding of what will work best for each individual guest. This allows us to match the right places to the right journey, creating itineraries that feel genuinely bespoke rather than pre-designed.

These independently run lodges are among those we trust most for their guiding, character, and sense of place. Each offers something distinct, which is why they work so beautifully within a carefully tailored safari.

Next week, we will be sharing a closer look at some of our favourite independent properties in our newsletter. To receive it, sign up to our newsletter via the link in our bio.

This month, Managing Director @ has embarked on a research trip to the Lamu Archipelago, revisiting classic properties while seeking out the newest hidden gems.

Positioned along Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline, the archipelago is home to a collection of remarkable retreats, each with its own distinct character. As a father of two, Ted found himself particularly enamoured with Manda Bay and its barefoot luxury feel.

Set on a pristine stretch of beach on Manda Island, this intimate lodge offers that rare balance of exclusivity and genuine family friendliness. With fewer than two dozen spacious bandas ideal for sharing, days here unfold at a gentle pace, with plenty to delight both little ones and adults alike. Idyllic sunloungers line the calm, shallow waters for those seeking pure relaxation, while sailing adventures on traditional dhows, snorkelling, and kayaking through mangroves offer something more active.

Remote yet wonderfully relaxed, it captures the barefoot charm that makes Lamu so special, while still delivering the comfort, warmth and ease that families truly value. A new favourite for those seeking something beautifully off the radar without compromising on experience.

Some evenings on safari stay with you more than any big sighting

Standing quietly on the riverbed of the Luangwa River, watching carmine bee eaters settle as the light softens, you feel the rhythm of the place slow right down. No urgency, no checklist. Moments like this are why South Luangwa remains one of our favourite regions in Africa.

When it comes to exceptional safaris, small details make a very big difference.

Last month, Africa expert Dave Fuller () returned to the Greater Kruger in South Africa.

While the region is iconic as a whole, each individual area within the Greater Kruger delivers a subtle yet distinctly different safari experience, shaped by landscape, wildlife and access - a clear reminder of why firsthand experience is so critical when planning a safari.

🦏In Timbavati, Dave was reminded why the area is so highly regarded for its biodiversity. Alongside strong Big Five sightings, the region is known for its quieter, more intimate style of game viewing and broader species diversity. During his stay, he encountered everything from rhino and hyena to the rarely seen pangolin.

🌿Moving into Ngala, the focus shifted to habitat and heritage. As one of the oldest private reserves in the region, Ngala offers vast, well protected wilderness and consistently exceptional guiding. A highlight for Dave was witnessing the reserve’s famous white lions, a sighting that remains both rare and deeply special.

🐆Finally, time in Sabi Sands reinforced why it is considered one of Africa’s most reliable safari destinations. With outstanding game drive access and some of the highest predator densities on the continent, Dave saw all five of the Big Five in a single drive, a clear illustration of why this region delivers so consistently.

This firsthand experience underpins every recommendation we make. We travel extensively so that when we suggest a region or a lodge, it is based on lived knowledge, not assumption.
