A few weeks ago, we teased that we were on the road discovering a brand-new destination that would soon be arriving at Discover North America.

Well, the secret is finally out… 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐨𝐰𝐚! 🇺🇸

And what a surprise it turned out to be.

Before travelling, we already knew some of Iowa's most famous stories: the Field of Dreams, the Bridges of Madison County and its agricultural heritage. What we hadn't appreciated was just how much more there was to discover.

Over the course of our journey, we stepped inside Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, drove between historic covered bridges, discovered Dutch, German, Czech, Slovak and Norwegian heritage, experienced farm-to-table dining, explored creative cities and welcoming small towns, and enjoyed one of the most memorable experiences of the trip: watching baseball at the Field of Dreams.

What surprised us most wasn't any single attraction. It was how naturally everything connected to create a fantastic self-drive destination.

What a fantastic couple of days we’ve had in Niagara Falls, Ontario, experiencing one of North America’s most iconic natural wonders from just about every angle!

We’ve seen the Falls from land, from the air and from the water, giving us three very different perspectives of their incredible scale and power. 🌊🚁

But our Canadian adventure isn’t over yet…

We’ve now headed north into the Yukon, where we’ll be experiencing another new destination first hand and discovering what makes this remarkable corner of Canada so special.

🇺🇸 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠? 🇺🇸

Another USA adventure is underway, but this time we’re keeping the destination under wraps for a little longer! 👀

After an overnight stay at the largest shopping and entertainment complex in North America, we headed south, passing seemingly endless cornfields on our way to a town where legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright certainly left his mark.

Here, we toured the first and only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Prairie School house in the entire state, before stepping inside the last remaining hotel in the world designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright.

From there, our journey continued south for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at one of the largest and most prestigious state fairs in the United States, which opens later this week for 11 days of classic Americana.

We finished the day high above the city at our hotel's rooftop restaurant, watching the sun set behind the magnificent golden dome of the State Capitol. 🌅

Steve's latest stop took him to Detroit, where he discovered a completely different side to the Motor City.

From the beautifully restored Michigan Central Station and world-class attractions at The Henry Ford to Major League Baseball, Detroit-style pizza, hidden speakeasies and an outstanding dining scene, Steve discovered a city that's proud of its heritage while embracing an exciting new future.

Our Managing Director, Steve, recently visited Michigan and, like many travellers, assumed Mackinac Island would be a wonderful day trip.

He couldn't have been more wrong.

Once the last ferry departed, the island revealed a completely different side of itself. Quiet streets, horse-drawn carriages, spectacular sunsets, peaceful waterfront walks and a pace of life that feels as though it's been frozen in time made Mackinac Island one of the standout highlights of his entire journey.

While many visitors arrive later in the day, those lucky enough to spend a few nights on Mackinac Island get to experience a completely different side of this magical destination.

As the sun rises, the streets are wonderfully quiet, the only sounds are the gentle clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages, birdsong and the waves lapping against the shoreline. With no private cars on the island, there's a peacefulness that's becoming increasingly rare to find.

Strolling through the historic streets or along the waterfront at this time of day, you genuinely feel as though you have the island all to yourself. It's the perfect opportunity to admire the beautifully preserved Victorian architecture, breathe in the fresh Lake Huron air and appreciate the slower pace of island life before the first ferries arrive.

It's moments like these that transform Mackinac Island from a day-trip destination into somewhere you truly experience. Staying for two or three nights allows you to enjoy the island at its most tranquil, discover its hidden corners, and soak up an atmosphere that simply can't be replicated during the busiest hours of the day.

Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences aren't the attractions at all—they're the quiet moments in between. Mackinac Island delivers those in abundance.
