๐ข DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN HAVE DIALYSIS ON A CRUISE SHIP? ๐ข
One of the things I've been researching recently as Amanda prepares to start dialysis is how people continue travelling whilst receiving treatment.
Something I didn't realise until recently is that some cruise ships have dedicated dialysis units onboard.
For many dialysis patients, treatment means travelling to hospital three times a week, spending several hours on dialysis, then making the journey home again. It can be exhausting.
Cruise dialysis offers a different experience.
Instead of arranging treatment ashore in different destinations, dialysis takes place onboard the ship in a dedicated dialysis unit staffed by experienced renal nurses and a nephrologist. Once your session is complete, you're straight back to enjoying your holiday.
Many cruises are planned so dialysis sessions fit around ports of call wherever possible, allowing passengers time to explore destinations or simply relax and enjoy everything the ship has to offer.
The onboard units are designed to mirror the treatment patients receive at home, with your usual dialysis prescription and requirements being arranged in advance with your renal team.
One thing I have learned is that spaces are extremely limited. Most cruises can only accommodate a small number of dialysis patients, often between 4 and 12 guests, so planning well ahead is essential.
There may also be financial assistance available depending on where you receive your dialysis treatment in the UK, so it's always worth discussing this with your renal team or holiday dialysis coordinator.
For anyone who thought dialysis meant giving up on seeing the world, it might be worth looking into. Whether it's exploring the Mediterranean, the Norwegian Fjords, the Caribbean or a river cruise through Europe, there are more options available than many people realise.
Have you been on a cruise whilst receiving dialysis? I'd love to hear about your experience and any tips you would share with others considering it for the first time.
