Look who came to explore James Herriot’s Yorkshire with us… 💙

During the final week of the school holidays, we had the pleasure of welcoming Thomas, who plays young Jimmy Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small, and his mum on a bespoke private tour.

Their day included places connected with the real James Herriot, Alf Wight, and his home town of Thirsk—the inspiration for Darrowby.

As we were born and brought up locally, it was a real honour for Alan to build on what Thomas already knew through playing Jimmy and help him visualise Alf Wight’s life through the places and landscapes he knew so well.

Thomas also added his signature to our Herriot vehicle, alongside those of his on-screen father, James, and Uncle Siegfried — a very special addition!

Thomas was an absolute delight: energetic, inquisitive and great fun. He and his mum were wonderful company, and our girls loved spending the day with him too.

The summer months are a busy time for us — and for the rest of the family too! 🚜🌾

These photographs capture my dad and brother at harvest here in Yorkshire: father and son working the land together, with their nearly 30-year-old Massey Ferguson 38 combine harvester earning its keep.

Alan and I both grew up in farming families, so the Yorkshire countryside has never simply been a beautiful backdrop to us. It is a living, working landscape, shaped and cared for by generations of farming families like ours—producing our food, tending its fields and hedgerows, and sustaining rural communities.

That shared farming background shapes how we see the Yorkshire countryside and how we share it with visitors on our small-group and private day tours from York. It is also why supporting British farming will always matter deeply to us. 🇬🇧

92 years old and still knows how to make an entrance… 🚂

Southern Railway No. 926 Repton may look every inch the classic British steam locomotive, but she has a rather unexpected North American story.

Built in 1934, Repton later crossed the Atlantic to the USA, spending time in Vermont before travelling north to Canada, where she carried passengers on the Cape Breton Steam Railway.

Eventually, she crossed the Atlantic once again and came home. ❤️

Today, Repton can be seen steaming through the North York Moors — and guests on our Moors, Whitby & The Yorkshire Steam Railway Day Trip from York can choose to experience a journey on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway as an optional extra.

A proper Yorkshire day in the Dales 🌧️

As we like to say here in Yorkshire, there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes!

And today was certainly a day for the waterproofs.

After an exceptionally dry summer, the recent rain has brought Linton Falls roaring back to life, with the River Wharfe putting on quite a show.

Nearby in Grassington, our driver-guide Mark and today’s guests were exploring the cobbled streets of the village — better known to All Creatures Great & Small fans as the fictional Darrowby.

And with the first look at Series 7 revealed this week, what better time to visit? Eagle-eyed fans may recognise the building behind our guests too — during filming, this becomes the famous Skeldale House. 🎬

Come rain or shine, there is always something rather special about a day in the Yorkshire Dales. 💚

Yorkshire in bloom 💜

Just look at those views! This is Yorkshire Lavender at Terrington, set high in the Howardian Hills with beautiful views across the Vale of York.

At this time of year the lavender fields are full of colour, making this one of those wonderful seasonal sights that make summer in North Yorkshire rather special.

And this is one of the joys of knowing Yorkshire as well as we do. Beyond the famous landmarks, there are so many lovely places, local favourites and seasonal gems that can become part of a day exploring the county.

🐋 A familiar piece of Whitby’s skyline is about to change…

The Whalebone Arch on Whitby’s West Cliff has long framed one of our favourite views in the town — across the harbour towards the unmistakable ruins of Whitby Abbey.

Did you know? The first Whalebone Arch was erected on Whitby’s West Cliff in the 1850s. The bones you see today are actually the third set to stand here, installed in 2003.

Now, the real whale bones that form the current arch are due to be removed and replaced with a bronze replica — making this one of the last opportunities to see them in place.

🌻 Our guests may have noticed that Kettlewell’s population has increased somewhat this week.

The Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival is back, filling this beautiful Upper Wharfedale village with some brilliantly imaginative creations.

This year’s winner is a wonderful tribute to Sir David Attenborough and Planet Earth, complete with a camera crew and some rather unexpected wildlife. We also spotted Wimbledon, the Tour de France, breakdancers, martial arts and plenty more around the village.

The festival began in 1994 as a fundraiser for Kettlewell Primary School and, more than thirty years later, continues to support local community organisations and groups.

Kettlewell may also look familiar from the screen. The village stood in for Knapely in the film Calendar Girls and has more recently been used as a filming location for All Creatures Great and Small, where we spotted film crews again earlier this year.

Kettlewell is one of the stops on our Yorkshire Dales National Park Day Tour from York, giving our guests time to explore this lovely Dales village and discover some of its local stories and traditions.

🌒 A rather special evening in Yorkshire…

Tonight we headed into beautiful Nidderdale, in the Yorkshire Dales, to watch the partial solar eclipse — and what a view Yorkshire gave us.

With the August heather turning the moorland purple, the evening sun glowing through the clouds and our homemade eclipse viewers at the ready, we were lucky enough to watch the Sun slowly become a brilliant crescent above the Yorkshire landscape.

A pretty magical way to spend a summer evening. 💜

Discover the real story of James Herriot and explore the Yorkshire Dales filming locations from All Creatures Great & Small on a private tour with your own local Yorkshire driver-guide.

For us, the story of James Herriot is personal.

Our connections with Alf Wight – the real James Herriot – and his veterinary practice go back generations. Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair were the vets for our family farm, Alan’s aunt worked at the practice, and one of our driver-guides lived next door to Alf and even worked as his gardener.

Our family connections extend to the original All Creatures Great & Small television series too, with family dogs appearing on screen – and there are plenty more stories and connections that we save for the tour.

It means that when you travel with us, you are not simply hearing a guidebook version of James Herriot’s Yorkshire. We can share family memories, local anecdotes and stories passed down by people who actually knew Alf and the veterinary practice.

If you choose to visit The World Of James Herriot in Thirsk, this is our first stop of the day. Here you can explore Alf Wight’s former home and veterinary surgery and discover where the real-life stories behind James Herriot began.

We then head into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, travelling through beautiful countryside and visiting locations used in the current All Creatures Great & Small television series.

There is time in Grassington, transformed into Darrowby for filming, along with more filming locations, wonderful Dales scenery and plenty of stories along the way.

With your own vehicle and local Yorkshire driver-guide, this private tour brings together the real life of Alf Wight, our own local connections and the Yorkshire locations that bring his stories to the screen.

⚓ Whitby Regatta on the Yorkshire Coast! ☀️

A fantastic atmosphere in Whitby yesterday for guests on our Whitby, Moors & North York Moors Day Trip from York, with Whitby Regatta in full swing.

And yes… that really is someone walking the plank! 😄

It is actually the traditional Greasy Pole Competition, where competitors attempt to make their way along a heavily greased pole over Whitby Harbour to grab the flag at the end — hopefully without ending up in the water!

Whitby Regatta has been part of the town’s summer for more than 180 years, with a long tradition of rowing, sailing and maritime events.

There is always more to Whitby than the famous sights, and Regatta weekend is a great example of the traditions and stories that are still very much part of this historic Yorkshire Coast town. ⚓️💙
