Međimurje feels a long way from the Croatia most people know — and that’s exactly why we like it. 🇭🇷

Start around Štrigova and make your way up to Mađerkin Breg for the view across the vineyards and hills. Then stay in the area for a tasting with W**ery Štampar. No need to rush either of them.

The next day, head down towards the Mura at Žabnik for a walk by the river and the old mill, then finish in Čakovec with a wander through Zrinski Park and the old town.

It’s an easy weekend to fill without trying too hard — countryside, w**e, river walks and a small city at the end of it.

We’d definitely have a car for this one. And if you’re doing the w**e tasting, sort the driving before you start.

If we were staying in Fužine for a weekend, these are the two places we’d be looking at.

is all about the setting — tucked into the trees with the lake and hills right there. .house has a warm, cosy feel inside, the sort of place that makes staying in for the evening sound like a perfectly good plan.

They’re different enough that we wouldn’t try to pick a winner. Both make sense for the same reason: Fužine is somewhere you come to enjoy the surroundings, and it’s nice to have a place you actually want to come back to afterwards.

A quieter corner of Zadar, hidden in plain sight. 🇭🇷

Behind the old stone walls of is the sort of courtyard that makes you forget you're staying right in the city.

Just 16 rooms across restored heritage buildings, with warm interiors and a Mediterranean garden. And when you're ready to explore, Zadar's old town is on the doorstep.

For anyone who prefers a hotel with character over a big resort, this one's worth knowing about.

Would you stay here for a weekend in Zadar?

A hotel built around its view.

At Hotel Navis Opatija near Opatija, the clean lines of the building sit between a wooded hillside and the rocky Kvarner shoreline. The sea is the focal point, with sea-facing rooms and a restaurant terrace overlooking the water.

For an Opatija stay, this is one to consider if architecture, dining and time by the sea matter more to you than being in the centre of town.

Save Navis for your Kvarner shortlist. Check current availability and dining reservations directly with the hotel.

48 hours in Motovun: hilltop lanes, truffle dogs and a taste of Istria.

FRIDAY
Make ROXANICH your base below the old town. Settle in, then take the uphill walk through Motovun’s stone lanes. Leave time to stop for the views.

SATURDAY
Head out with MIRO TARTUFI for a guided truffle experience. Arrange the start time and meeting point in advance, and leave a generous gap before a separately reserved Roxanich w**e tasting. Round off the day with dinner at Forchetta 1902.

SUNDAY
A slow breakfast, one last look across the countryside, then onward through Istria.

Comfortable shoes for the cobbles; suitable outdoor footwear for the hunt. Book accommodation, experiences and meals separately, and confirm timings and weather arrangements before travelling. The pictured dish illustrates the restaurant’s cooking; menus change.

Save this for a two-night Istrian escape.

A first Šibenik walk, in the right order.

Start at St Michael’s Fortress for the bay view. Follow the old-town steps down to St James Cathedral and look for its 71 carved faces. Finish on the waterfront. Check fortress hours before visiting.

Croatia in October is less forgiving of a loose itinerary. Choose your base only after checking ferry service on your exact dates, seasonal opening hours and the local forecast. Zagreb and mainland stops are easier autumn anchors; a coastal or island stay can still work, but the timetable—not the map—should decide it.
