Planning to come to Japan in late September? You might be pleasantly surprised to stumble upon Tsukimi, which is Japan’s moon-viewing tradition 🌕

It is not a loud street festival with parades. Instead, it is a quiet custom rooted in giving thanks for the autumn harvest. You can join in on the celebration by taking a quite moment to appreciate the full moon (obviously!), but also by eating dango dumplings and a bowl of tsukimi udon topped with an egg yolk “moon” 🍡🍜

Japan just dropped its first Autumn Forecast for 2026, and this is your cue to start planning! 🍁

Kōyō sweeps south down the country over about five weeks 👀 Sapporo catches the first colour around 7 November, and Kyoto’s famous maples hit their peak red around 11 December.

Fukuoka’s got its own magic, and these day trips are how the locals do it right.

We always love a wander round Hakata or Tenjin, but if you want to see more of what Kyushu has to offer, these are our favourite day trips from Fukuoka to add to your Kyushu itinerary:

🛶 Yanagawa: 50 minutes from Fukuoka
⛩️ Dazaifu: 45 minutes from Fukuoka
🌸 Nokonoshima: A 10-minute ferry (but around 1 hour from the city centre)
🏯 Karatsu: 1 hour 15 from Fukuoka
♨️ Takeo Onsen: 1 hour from Fukuoka

If you love matcha (or even if you don’t), you need to visit Uji 🍵

Just outside Kyoto, Uji is one of Japan’s most famous tea-producing regions 👀

You can wander through traditional tea shops, try freshly prepared matcha, eat basically every matcha dessert imaginable and learn about a tea culture that has been developing here for centuries.

But Uji is also so much more than matcha.

⛩️ Visit the beautiful Byodoin Temple: the building you’ll recognise from the back of the Japanese ¥10 coin
🌿 Walk along the Uji River
🍵 Join a traditional tea experience
🍦 Try matcha soba, matcha parfaits, matcha ice cream and more
