🌍 Have You Heard of Tanzania's Most Surprising Safari Park?
Most travellers on Tanzania's northern circuit focus on the big names — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Kilimanjaro. And with good reason. But there is a park that sits quietly between Arusha and Ngorongoro, takes less than two hours to reach from the city, and consistently delivers wildlife encounters that travellers describe as the highlight of their entire East African journey.
That park is Lake Manyara National Park. And it is extraordinary.
Here is what makes it unlike any other park in Tanzania:
🦁 Tree-Climbing Lions. Lake Manyara is one of only two places on the planet where lions have been documented regularly resting and sleeping in trees. No one fully understands why they developed this behaviour. What we do know is that the sight of a pride draped across the branches of a fig tree — tails hanging lazily, watching the world below with complete indifference — is one of the most astonishing things you will ever see on a game drive.
🦩 A Flamingo-Fringed Alkaline Lake. The park's namesake lake is a shallow, alkaline body of water fed by underground springs from the Rift Valley escarpment. When conditions are right, its shallows fill with thousands of lesser and greater flamingos — turning the lakeshore a deep, extraordinary pink. Large hippo pools near the park entrance add to the spectacle, and pelicans, storks, and herons gather in numbers that will delight even the most seasoned birdwatcher.
🌿 An Ancient Groundwater Forest. The park's northern sector is dominated by one of Tanzania's finest forests — dense, cool, and alive with olive baboons, blue monkeys, and colobus swinging through the giant fig trees. It is also prime leopard territory.
🐘 Legendary Elephant Research. Manyara's elephant herds are among the most studied in Africa. It was here that pioneering researcher Iain Douglas-Hamilton conducted the work that transformed our global understanding of elephant intelligence and social behaviour.
