A Rare Hybrid Zebra Spotted at Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Look closely—the zebra in the back is a rare hybrid between a Common zebra and a Grevy’s zebra! This fascinating phenomenon, called interspecific hybridization, occurs when species from the same genus interbreed.

Hybrids like this showcase traits from both parents. For instance, they might have the slender build of a Grevy’s zebra paired with the bold, broader stripes of a Common zebra. However, most hybrids are infertile, unable to reproduce further—a natural reminder of the delicate boundaries between species.

This sighting is a testament to the incredible adaptability and diversity of nature. Have you come across something extraordinary like this during a safari?

Did you know that Giraffes engage in a fascinating behavior called "necking"?

Male giraffes engage in necking as a way to establish dominance and compete for mating rights. This behavior involves two males standing side by side and swinging their long necks, using their heads as weapons to strike each other. The blows can be powerful and dangerous, even causing death.

Necking battles can vary in intensity, from light sparring to more aggressive and prolonged encounters. The winner of these contests often gains higher status within the group and better access to females during mating periods. While necking can sometimes cause injury, it is a natural part of giraffe behavior and their way of asserting dominance.

You may have heard of the Big Five animals during your Kenyan Safari, but what about their smaller cousins?

The "Small Five" animals are a playful counterpart to the iconic "Big Five" safari animals. They are named after their larger namesakes and are small, elusive creatures that can make a safari even more interesting. Here's the list:

Elephant Shrew – A tiny insect-eating mammal with a long nose, resembling an elephant's trunk.

Buffalo Weaver – A small bird, known for its communal nests made from twigs.

Leopard Tortoise – A beautifully patterned tortoise with a shell resembling a leopard’s spots.

Antlion – An insect known for its predatory larval stage, where it digs conical pits to trap prey.

Rhino Beetle – A strong beetle with a horn-like protrusion on its head, mimicking a rhino.

Spotting these creatures adds an extra layer of challenge and fun to any safari experience!

Unlike most cats which hunt at night, Cheetahs primarily hunt in the early morning and late afternoon. They rely on sight, scanning from termite moulds or kopjes. Once they spot prey, they creep closer before their final sprint.
