Hakgala Botanical Garden Reopens to Visitors

Hakgala Botanical Garden has reopened to the public from 25th December 2025 following a temporary closure due to adverse weather conditions.

While visitor access has resumed, a few identified high-risk areas remain temporarily restricted in line with safety recommendations. Special arrangements have been made to ensure a safe and pleasant experience for visitors.

This historic garden, established in 1861 and home to over 10,000 plant species, offers stunning displays of roses, orchids and temperate flora in a cool mountain climate. It is the second largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka and a favourite destination for nature lovers and photographers.

According to Hindu culture - the Ramayana written by Maharshi Valmiki, the area around Hakgala is believed to be part of Ashok Vatika—where Princess Sita was kept by King Ravana—adding a Ramayana connection to this serene landscape.

Sri Lanka Railways Recovery Update

Sri Lanka Railways is steadily restoring the national rail network following recent extreme weather events. Train services are already operating on key routes, and further sections are scheduled to reopen in the coming weeks.

As part of the recovery and tourism revival, a regional tourist train service between Badulla and Ambewela will be introduced on 01 Jan 2026, subject to NBRO approval, offering travellers a scenic highland journey.

With 80% of railway tracks expected to be operational by January 2026 and over 83% by February 2026, rail connectivity across the island continues to strengthen—supporting both daily travel and tourism.

Sri Lanka remains open, accessible, and ready to welcome travellers as infrastructure recovery progresses with resilience and care.
