A journey through winter with a Kazakh nomadic family ❄️ | Western Mongolia

Every winter, Kazakh herding families move with their animals in search of pasture and shelter. Their lives are shaped by the mountains, the weather, their animals, and generations of tradition.

I spent time with Syerikbol and his family, documenting their winter migration in the Altai region of Western Mongolia.

From the daily work with animals to the long journey across the winter landscape, this experience offered a glimpse into nomadic life beyond the usual tourist trail.

This is how the Sailau family lives deep in the mountains of Tsambagarav.

They move with the seasons, living in traditional felt gers right where the fresh glacial rivers meet the green meadows. Their days are shaped by simple, meaningful routines—tending to their animals, cooking traditional Besbarmak meals over an open fire, and passing down ancient skills to the grandchildren on the grass.

Step inside their home, and you quickly realize that their heritage is built on deep relationships. Dressed in his heavy winter furs, Sailau sits proudly with his majestic golden eagle. To him, the eagle is more than a tool or a helper—she is a true member of the family.

Before the cold winds arrive to lock the high pastures in ice, their valley is filled with music, laughter, and an open door for anyone who visits. It is a quiet, beautiful life lived in perfect harmony with the land.

The Great Summer Migration – Day 1

Today, our guests joined a local Kazakh nomadic family on horseback as they began their annual summer migration across the Altai Mountains.

Together, they helped guide the herds toward the fresh summer pastures, sharing an authentic tradition that has been passed down through generations.

This is more than a horseback ride—it's a chance to become part of a living nomadic culture.
