The Bread is to die for!!!😋
New owner of "The Trading Post," Chris Schumann, shares his vision with LIN Magazine as he unveils plans for this beloved establishment.
Nestled inconspicuously around the corner from Europa Hoff and Steckels Motors, The Trading Post may appear unremarkable at first glance. However, the enchanting aroma of freshly baked bread permeating the air is sure to captivate any passer-by.
Recently, the shop underwent a change in ownership, with Chris Schumann taking the reins from his father-in-law, Lappies, on April 1st.
Excitement radiates from Chris as he discusses his vision for The Trading Post. "I have big plans to expand," he enthuses. "Not to new premises, but definitely a larger bakery area. Baking is my passion, and I have countless ideas swirling in my head.
Currently, we feel a bit stagnant due to limited space, but that's about to change."
The COVID-19 pandemic presented an unexpected turning point for The Trading Post. Faced with adversity, Chris and his team adapted by venturing into the realm of food. In order to retain all staff members, they started crafting and delivering homemade meals to their loyal customers. This move not only allowed them to weather the storm but also provided an opportunity to explore their culinary skills.
Although Chris's background lies in the banking world, it was his father-in-law's introduction to the world of cooking that ignited his newfound passion for culinary delights. Transitioning from a 9-to-5 banking routine to owning his own business was a leap of faith, but Chris, alongside his wife Marie Louise and their three children, embraced the challenge with open arms.
The day at The Trading Post begins at an early 3 am, where the ovens start humming. However, with the acquisition of a larger oven on the horizon, Chris anticipates a slight reprieve from the early mornings. The Trading Post prides itself on sourcing fresh, locally produced ingredients. From free-range eggs to artisanal products from South Africa, their business encompasses a kaleidoscope of unique offerings, including a coffee shop, arts and crafts, bakery delights, and handcrafted goods.
In a recent development, The Trading Post obtained a liquor license, signalling the introduction of a carefully curated selection of libations to their repertoire. Amidst these changes, Lappies, the creative force behind the shop, continues to be involved, ensuring the preservation of family ties.
"We often joke that I married into the business," Chris chuckles, highlighting the intertwining of personal and professional spheres.
While some may still consider The Trading Post a hidden gem, its reputation has grown exponentially within the five years since its inception, fuelled primarily by word-of-mouth recommendations. Locals and tourists alike find solace in this establishment, whether they seek a daily batch of fresh bread or a steaming cup of cappuccino. With its irresistible charm, this proudly Namibian shop is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who step through its doors.
