The most intensive way to experience this land and its people is by doing a self-drive tour. Being independent of a set timetable and determining the travel route your self makes it possible to experience the uniqueness of Namibia. This includes a car hire company with German & Englisch speaking contact persons. At Africa on Wheels customer care is our highest priority. Africa on Wheels was established in 1999. The company was founded based on the high demand of used cars in a reliable condition at a good price. The fleet at Africa on Wheels Car Rental now consists of about 80 vehicles ranging from new to a couple of years depending on the category. Africa on Wheels specializes primarily in the business of four-wheel-drive vehicles (4x4). The four-wheel drive selection offers adapted solutions for the Namibian infrastructure, as well as all the necessary camping gear. All vehicles are serviced by our own workshop in order to ensure flexibility and the highest security standards. With our years of experience we are happy to give our customers a personal introduction to the vehicle and driving tips for tarr and off-road driving at the vehicle hand over. Africa on Wheels is now offering vehicles for Off-Road-Dune-Driving for self-drives. In addition to the countries Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, you can now travel with our approval into Angola. Namibia’s road network is known as one of the best in Africa. All of Namibia’s main roads are tarred. The majority of the roads are however sand and gravel roads. For a more comfortable driving experience we always recommend a four-wheel-drive vehicle. I am looking forward in welcoming you.

"What's this little flap on the side of your canopy for?" 🤔

It's one of the questions we hear quite often, so here's the answer:

When you're driving on Namibia's gravel roads, the flap should be opened. It faces into the airflow, allowing fresh air to enter the canopy while you're driving.

This creates slight positive pressure inside the canopy. Instead of dusty air being drawn in through tiny gaps, the pressure pushes air back out, helping to keep dust away from your luggage. 💡

It might seem like a tiny detail, but it's a clever feature designed specifically for dusty road conditions – and one more reason why these vehicles are so well suited for exploring Namibia. 🚙💨

⚠️ Important Travel Update: If your Namibia road trip includes crossing the border into South Africa, please note that new Customs requirements came into effect on 1 July 2026.

Most travellers entering or leaving South Africa are now required to complete an online Traveller Declaration before travelling 👉 https://www.sars.gov.za/travellerdeclaration/

Key points:
✅ The declaration applies to most travellers by road, air, sea and rail.
✅ It must be completed within 24 hours before arrival in South Africa.
✅ Every traveller requires a declaration, including children (parents or guardians may complete it on their behalf).
✅ After submitting, you'll receive a confirmation that should be kept on your phone or printed for presentation if required.

The declaration forms part of South Africa's Customs process and includes declaring goods, currency and other items where applicable.

Please note that only limited exceptions apply (for example, certain air or sea transit passengers who remain within the international transit area).

As entry requirements can change, we strongly recommend checking the latest information and completing your declaration before travelling via the official SARS Traveller Management System.
