There’s safari… and then there’s safari on foot. 👣🐘

Without the hum of a vehicle, everything changes.

You start noticing tracks in the sand. Bird calls. The direction of the wind. The tiny signs that tell you what might have passed through just minutes before.

A walking safari isn’t about covering huge distances or chasing the Big Five. It’s slower, quieter and much more about understanding the bush around you.

And no, you don’t need to be an experienced hiker. Most walks are a relaxed two to four hours, led by expert guides and scouts who know how to read the landscape and wildlife.

Zambia is considered the birthplace of the walking safari, while Tanzania offers some incredible options for getting away from the vehicle tracks and into more remote wilderness.

The biggest misconception about the Great Migration? That it happens once a year.

The Great Migration isn’t one event. It’s a journey that never really stops.

More than a million wildebeest, joined by hundreds of thousands of zebra and other grazing animals, move through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in an annual cycle, following the rains, water and fresh grazing.

And that means the experience changes depending on when — and where — you go.

Newborn calves and predator action.
Vast herds moving across the plains.
Dramatic river crossings.
Lush green landscapes.

So instead of asking “When is the Great Migration?”, ask:

This river never reaches the sea… and that’s only the beginning of what makes the Okavango Delta so extraordinary.

Instead, the Okavango River spreads out across Botswana’s Kalahari Desert, creating a huge maze of waterways, floodplains and islands, an oasis surrounded by dry land.

But here’s the really fascinating part: the wildlife doesn’t just live here. It helps build the landscape.

🐘 Elephants push through the wetlands, widening channels and opening new paths for the floodwaters.

🐜 Termites bring soil up from beneath the Kalahari, building mounds that can eventually grow into entire islands.

Then each year, floodwaters arrive just as much of southern Africa is entering its dry winter months, transforming the landscape once again.

It’s wild, constantly changing and unlike anywhere else in Africa.
