Japan is incredibly rewarding to explore. It can also involve a lot of moving parts.

There are cities to connect, transport to understand, sightseeing to fit together and a great deal of local context that is easy to miss when you are concentrating on logistics. An escorted tour takes much of that organising off your plate while still giving you the depth that makes Japan interesting. Your guides can add context to what you are seeing, and a carefully planned route means less time deciding how to get from one place to the next.

That contrast is a big part of the fun. One day can hold peaceful gardens, local neighbourhoods, busy stations and streets lit from one end to the other.

Japan in autumn has a completely different kind of pull. 🍁

Spring might get much of the attention, but autumn changes the feel of Japan in its own way. Temple gardens move through reds and golds, mountain scenery takes on a completely different character, and places such as Kyoto, the Japanese Alps and Tokyo each give you a different version of the season. The timing varies depending on where you travel, so it is better thought of as a season to plan around rather than one single week.

If Japan is on the list for next year, autumn is well worth considering.

Today marks 35 years of independence for Uzbekistan.

For travellers, days like this are a good reminder that the places we visit are much more than the monuments we came to photograph. Beyond Samarkand’s blue tiles, Bukhara’s old streets and Khiva’s walls is a living country with its own stories, celebrations and sense of identity.

Uzbekistan’s Silk Road cities have a way of making centuries of history feel remarkably close. A beautiful day to put this part of Central Asia back on the travel list.
