For a mountain like Sandia Peak, a few well-timed winter storms can make a big difference. El Niño’s potential to create a more active southern storm track could increase opportunities for those storms to reach the Sandia Mountains this winter. While there are no guarantees, an active El Niño has skiers around Albuquerque looking toward the mountain and hoping for snow.

El Niño could bring more opportunities for winter storms to move across the Southwest, which is welcome news for Pajarito Mountain. Located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains, Pajarito can respond quickly when storms roll through, while continued snowmaking improvements help support conditions between storms. Keep your eyes on the forecast for what could be an exciting winter in Los Alamos.

Ski Santa Fe’s high base elevation is already a major advantage when winter arrives, and an El Niño pattern could add another reason for optimism. More active Pacific storm systems across the Southwest could bring additional opportunities for natural snowfall, while cold overnight temperatures and snowmaking help maintain conditions throughout the season. This winter, Santa Fe skiers have plenty of reasons to start counting down to opening day.

What could El Niño mean for Angel Fire this winter? A more active southern storm track could bring additional opportunities for natural snowfall across northern New Mexico. Angel Fire’s high-elevation terrain and extensive snowmaking system also provide a strong foundation for maintaining quality conditions throughout the season. If the storms keep coming, Angel Fire will be ready to make the most of them.

In southern New Mexico, Ski Apache could see benefits from winter storm systems moving across the Southwest during an El Niño year. Situated beneath Sierra Blanca Peak, the resort combines high-elevation terrain with snowmaking and a diverse range of runs. Winter gear season is almost here, and the 2026 NM Ski Swap is back October 30 through November 1. Shop thousands of new and used skis, snowboards, boots, clothing, kids’ gear, and accessories, all while supporting the Sandia Peak Ski Patrol.

Friday’s VIP Pre-Sale runs from 7–10 p.m. for $20 per person, with kids 12 and under free with a paying adult. Public sales are Saturday, October 31, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday, November 1, from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Admission is $2.

Whether you’re gearing up for your first day on the mountain or looking to sell equipment you no longer need, the NM Ski Swap is a great place to start the season.

Could El Niño bring more snow to Red River this winter? There’s reason to be optimistic. Historically, El Niño can favor storm patterns that bring Pacific moisture into the southern Rockies, potentially benefiting the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Combined with Red River’s snowmaking capabilities and high-elevation terrain, the 2026–27 season could be one to watch.
