It has been an epic week on the Battenkill, and one I will not forget anytime soon.

Since spotting the first Hendricksons in mid-April, my buddy Doug and I have been river rats, hunting rising fish up and down the river with the usual outcome. The conditions feel right, the bugs are there, and still we keep asking the same question.

Where are all the rising fish?

But that’s part of it. That’s the Battenkill. We knew they were there. And eventually, I found the one I had been looking for.

A guide has to fish in order to be a good guide. At least that’s what I tell myself when I suddenly have an opening in the schedule.

After watching one of the heaviest Hendrickson spinner falls I’ve seen on the Battenkill, I went back out the next evening with the canoe and a 4wt to see if the river would cooperate.

The bugs were there, the conditions were right, and in true Battenkill fashion, the fish still made me work for it.

After a few refusals, a fly change, and a little patience, a beautiful wild brook trout finally came to the net.

Everything can feel like it is lining up perfectly out there, and you still never really know what the river is going to give you.

That’s what makes the Battenkill the Battenkill.
