What does luxury expedition travel actually look like?

It's probably not what you think.

When people hear “expedition,” I think they picture cold weather, rubber boots, small boats and a lot of roughing it.

And yes…there are rubber boots. 😉

But luxury expedition cruising takes that sense of adventure and pairs it with a pretty incredible level of comfort.

I experienced this with HX, and it's one of the things that really stuck with me.

You're getting out there. You're exploring places that aren't easily accessible. You're stepping onto a Zodiac to get closer to the landscape and wildlife. You're hiking, kayaking, learning from expedition experts and actually experiencing the destination.

And then you come back onboard to a beautiful suite, excellent food, and all the little comforts you'd expect from a luxury experience.

That's what I love about expedition travel.

The adventure is real. The roughing-it part is optional.

And for travelers who have already done the classic European cities, Caribbean resorts or traditional cruises, expedition travel can be such a fun way to see the world from a completely different perspective.

Alaska. Antarctica. Greenland. The Arctic. The Galápagos.

The question isn't really Would I like an expedition?”

It's "Where would you like your next adventure to take you?”

Is fall the new summer?

I'm starting to think it might be. I know I have said this before but I am seeing it more and more.

Every year, I have clients who want to experience Europe in the summer because…well, that's when you go to Europe, right?

Except summer can also mean heat, crowds, higher prices, and having to plan around peak-season availability.

September and October can give you a very different experience.

🍂 Cooler temperatures
🍂 Fewer crowds
🍂 Beautiful fall scenery
🍂 Great food and wine season
🍂 More comfortable days for exploring
🍂 And sometimes, a little more breathing room when it comes to availability

And honestly, after experiencing the Danube in late October myself, I get it.

There is something really lovely about exploring Europe when you don't feel like you're sharing every square inch of it with the rest of the world.

Would I skip summer altogether? Of course not.

But if you've been thinking about Europe for 2027, I'd encourage you to at least consider September or October before automatically reaching for July or August.

Sometimes the best time to go isn't the most obvious one.

And that's one of the things I love about helping clients plan travel: finding the right time to go, not just the most popular time.

I get this question more than you might think.

And my answer is…probably more people than you realize.

I’ve personally experienced AmaWaterways on the Danube in late October, and one of the things I loved was how easy the whole experience felt.

You unpack once.

You wake up somewhere new.

You can spend the day exploring a city, wandering through a small town, biking, tasting wine, or joining a guided excursion.

Then you come back to the ship, relax, have dinner, and do it all again the next day.

River cruising is especially great for people who:

• Want to see a lot of Europe without constantly changing hotels
• Like having excursions and logistics taken care of
• Prefer smaller towns and cities over big tourist hubs
• Enjoy active days but don't necessarily want an adventure vacation
• Want a more intimate experience than a large ocean cruise
• Are traveling with family or multiple generations and want everyone to have options

And here's the part I think people sometimes get wrong:

River cruising isn't just for retirees. 😉

There are active excursions, bikes, hiking, food and wine experiences, cultural experiences, and plenty of opportunities to get out and explore.

It's really for someone who wants to experience Europe without having to manage every detail of getting around Europe.

That's a pretty good vacation in my book.

Disney just gave Philadelphia-area families a pretty exciting reason to start thinking about fall 2027. 👀

The Disney Wish is coming to New York City in September 2027, with seven sailings departing right from Manhattan.

Five will head to Bermuda, including three with extended stays, which means more time to actually enjoy Bermuda instead of feeling like you just stopped there for a minute. 💗

And the other two? New England & Canada during peak fall foliage.🍁 Disney hasn’t sailed that itinerary in nearly four years, so this is a pretty special return.

For families in the Philly area, that makes a Disney cruise SO much easier. No flights. No airport stress. Just head north and board the Wish.

Castaway Club bookings open August 31, with general booking opening September 8. And if past NYC Disney sailings are any indication, I wouldn’t wait too long.

If you’ve been saying, “I’d love to do Disney Cruise Line, but getting to the port is the problem…”

Well... that problem just got a whole lot smaller. 😉

I keep seeing people talk about slow travel, and honestly, I think this is one travel trend that actually makes sense.

Not slow as in boring.

Slow as in staying somewhere long enough to actually experience it.

Instead of five cities in seven days, maybe you spend a week in one place. You find your favorite little restaurant. You figure out which market is worth getting up for. You recognize the guy at the coffee shop. You take a day with nowhere you have to be.

Think a week in an Italian hill town.

Ten days on one Greek island.

A few nights in one neighborhood in Lisbon instead of trying to see all of Portugal.

There is something really nice about not constantly packing, unpacking, checking train schedules and figuring out where you are going next.

And honestly, I think this is where luxury travel is heading.

Not necessarily bigger rooms or more expensive hotels.

More time.

More space.

More opportunity to actually be where you are.

Because the trips people remember most aren't always the ones where they saw the most.

Sometimes they are the ones where they finally stopped rushing.

And I think we could all use a little more of that.

A week ago, some of my clients were standing in Iceland watching the sky go dark in the middle of the day.

A total solar eclipse.

Two minutes of totality, and from everything they told me afterward, it was one of those experiences that is really hard to put into words. You just have to be there.

And here’s the thing about eclipses...

Once you experience one, you start thinking about the next one.

And the next one is a big one.

On August 2, 2027, totality will sweep across Spain, Morocco and Egypt, lasting up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds.

Six minutes.

There are already cruises being planned specifically around the eclipse, along with some pretty incredible land-based options. Imagine watching it from southern Spain, Morocco, or near Luxor in Egypt.

Or from the deck of a ship, somewhere in the Mediterranean, with nothing but ocean around you.

I have a feeling 2027 eclipse trips are going to become one of those things people wish they had planned sooner.

Because sometimes the trips that make the best stories are the ones that felt a little crazy when you first started planning them.

The destination you almost talked yourself out of.

The itinerary that seemed slightly too ambitious.

The trip that made you think, “Are we sure this is a good idea?”

And then you go.

And it turns out to be the trip you never stop talking about.

You don’t always need to have it all figured out before you take the leap.

For anyone with Hawaii travel on the horizon, or clients currently on the islands, here’s a quick update.

Tropical Storm Lala is moving away from the Hawaiian Islands, and conditions are gradually improving. Airports across Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Hawaii Island remain open, although some flights may still be affected.

A few things to keep in mind right now:

• Flood watches remain in effect for Kauai, Oahu and Maui through tonight.
• Kauai remains under a Tropical Storm Warning.
• High surf advisories are in effect for east-facing shores of Kauai and Oahu through midnight.
• Hawaii Island currently has no tropical warnings in effect.

If you’re traveling soon, check directly with your airline before heading to the airport and allow some extra time.

Already on island? Avoid unnecessary road travel and stay out of any water that looks brown or murky.
